신앙 때문에 옥고를 치르기도 했으며, 중국 지하교회의 존경받는 성도이자, 한국VOM의 공식협력단체 차이나에이드(ChinaAid)의 설립자인 밥 푸 목사가 5월 21일, 현 중국 교회의 상황을 전하기 위해 순교자의 소리 마포 사무실에서 특별강연을 연다.

“중국 기독교인들이 ‘다시 시작된 박해의 파도’라고 불리는 이 핍박에 직면하고 있습니다. 목회자들은 체포되고, 십자가와 교회들이 철거되었으며, 기독교인 인권 변호사들은 자신들이 납치, 협박, 고문당할 것을 예상합니다.” 현숙 폴리 대표는 말했다. “종교의 자유를 위해 거침없는 활동을 펼쳤던 인권 변호사 리바이광 박사가 그 예입니다. 올해 초, 그는 납치되어 의심스러운 정황 속에 사망했습니다.”

밥 푸 목사는 시진핑 주석의 정권 아래 기독교인들을 향한 핍박이 급격하게 증가하고 있으며, 시 주석의 종신 집권 선언으로 사태는 더욱 악화될 것이라고 말했다.

“2월부터, 집에서 기도 모임을 진행하는 것조차 철저하게 금지되었습니다.” 밥 푸 목사가 말했다. “이 법에 따르지 않을 경우, 그 주택은 철거와 몰수의 대상이 됩니다. 새로운 종교사무조례에 따르면, 18세 이하의 그 누구에게도 종교적인 메시지를 나누는 것은 불법입니다. 학생들, 청년들, 그리고 공산당원들이 교회에 출입하는 것은 금지되었습니다.”

폴리 현숙 대표는 정부에 등록된 교회들조차 안면인식 카메라의 설치와, 교회를 감시하는 공산당원을 위한 사무공간을 제공하도록 강요받았다고 전했다.

“이미 기독교인들에게 ‘사악한 이단’에 속해있는 사람들이라는 꼬리표가 붙었습니다. 이들이 그저 ‘천로역정’과 같은 책을 읽었다는 이유로 말입니다.” 폴리 현숙 회장은 덧붙였다.

유출된 한 공산당 문서에 따르면 중국교회가 직면한 이 새로운 규제들이 ‘가속화된 기독교 성장을 저지’하기 위한 것임을 드러낸다고 밥 푸 목사는 설명했다. 밥 푸 목사는 중국 정부가 “중국화(化)된 기독교”를 장려하고 있다고 주장했다.

이것이 바로 밥 푸 목사와 한국 VOM이 제자훈련자료들을 위성방송으로 중국에 송출하기 위해 협력하는 이유이다. 이 방송은 하루 24시간, 일주일 내내 송출되며 성경낭독, 밥 푸 목사의 교육내용, 전 세계 핍박받는 교회를 섬기는 강사들의 설교, 그리고 다양한 제자훈련내용들이 방송에 포함된다.

“이런 방송들은 중국 교회에 정말 중요합니다. 왜냐하면, 중국 정부에 의해 중국 내륙의 소식들이 철저히 검열되고 있기 때문입니다.” 폴리 현숙 대표는 말한다. “중국을 제외한 전 세계가 중국에서 벌어지고 있는 핍박에 관한 소식을 듣는다 해도, 정작 중국 안에 있는 교회들은 이것을 모릅니다. 한 도시에 있는 교회들은 다른 이웃 도시들의 교회가 직면한 핍박에 대해 전혀 알지 못하곤 합니다.”

On May 21, respected member of the Chinese underground church, former prisoner of faith, and founder of VOMK partner ChinaAid, Reverend Bob Fu will be joining Voice of the Martyrs at their office in Mapo to speak about the current state of the Chinese church.

“Christians are facing what many call a renewed wave of persecution. Pastors are arrested, crosses are pulled down, churches are demolished, Christian human rights lawyers are believed to have been kidnapped, intimidated and tortured,” Board chair Hyun Sook Foley explains. “Human rights attorney, Li Baiguang, an outspoken campaigner for religious freedom, is an example of this. Earlier this year, he was kidnapped and died in suspicious circumstances.”

Rev. Fu says that the persecution of Christians has increased dramatically under President Xi Jinping and is expected to become worse now that Xi has essentially been declared president for life.

“Since February, even organizing a prayer meeting in your home is totally forbidden,” says Pastor Fu. “If you disobey, your home will be subject to destruction and confiscation. According to the new religious regulations, you cannot share religious messages with anyone under 18. And students, young people, and Communist party members have been forbidden from entering churches.”

According to Board chair Foley, even registered churches in China are forced to install facial recognition cameras and provide office space for Communist party members to monitor the church.

“Already we are seeing Christians labeled as belonging to ‘evil cults’, simply because they have been found reading books like Pilgrim’s Progress,” Board chair Foley adds.

According to Rev. Fu, a leaked Communist party document reveals the new restrictions that the church is facing are to “contain the overheated growth of Christianity.” Rev. Fu claims that the Chinese government promotes “the construction of Christianity with Chinese Characteristics.”

This is why Rev. Fu and Voice of the Martyrs Korea have been working together to broadcast discipleship materials into China via satellite radio. This broadcast can be accessed twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week and includes scripture, lessons from Rev. Fu, lessons from the persecuted church around the world, and various other discipleship materials.

“Broadcasts like this are important to the Chinese church because the news in China is strongly censored by the government,” Board chair Foley explains. “Although the rest of the world hears about persecution happening in China, churches inside China typically do not hear about it. Churches in one city are often unaware of the persecution that the church in a neighboring city is facing.”

On Monday, May 21 at 7:30 PM in the VOMK office in Mapo, Pastor Fu will share his experiences with the Chinese church and recommend ways that Korean Christians can best respond to the significant increase in restriction and persecution against Christians on the part of the Chinese government.
