Emergency relief for the displaced Christians in Burkina Faso due to COVID-19 and Jihadist attacks

Family of displaced Christians from northern Burkina Faso. They escaped during the attack

Christians in northern Burkina Faso are suffering because of their faith. Many of them have been forced to leave their houses and all their belongings behind.

The attacks of the so-called “unknown terrorist groups – GAT” have started to become more intense and some of the radical groups are determined to target Christians only.

Simple tents for the displaced Christians. Most of them had to escape without their belongings; they were only able to save their lives

This has resulted in several attacks on churches during worship services and targeting pastors/ priests during the attacks on the villages.

As a result, in many areas, churches have started to gather in hiding. Today, over one million Burkinabe have had to leave their homes due to terrorist attacks. Among them, more than 8,000 Christians urgently need help.

Among many others, Pastor Blaise (name changed for security reasons) and his wife had to leave the village where they were serving the Lord for several years, due to another pastor and six of his church members being brutally murdered by a group of Jihadists.

The building of the Assembly of God church in Pobe Mengao, Burkina Faso. After several attacks, everyone left the village. The first people that had to leave that place were Christians. No one knows if the church building is still there and in what condition.

They found refuge in another small town about 350 km from their village. But due to COVID-19, things became extremely difficult in this new town. The local markets were locked down, as well as all activities on the streets. This made the situation of displaced Christians even worse.  Every year people normally suffer hunger from March until May, but with COVID-19, their situation became almost hopeless.

VOM Korea was able to raise over 1,500,000 KRW to provide emergency help to Burkina Faso. Working with our local contacts, we distributed food and hygiene products to Pastor Blaise, his wife and others just like them.

Pastor Blaise said, “We are thankful to God that He saved our lives. We are grateful to our brothers and sisters that helped us and supported us in this challenging time.”
