MINISTRY OFFERS FREE BOOK ON NORTH KOREAN UNDERGROUND CHRISTIANS

Saying “Today is the day for gospel ministry to North Korea,” Voice of the Martyrs CEO Pastor Eric Foley announced that the ministry is making its popular book on North Korean underground Christians, These are the Generations, available for free this month to South Korean Christians.
“There is a common misconception in Korea that gospel ministry to North Korea is a future event, but in fact the church is growing faster today in North Korea than South Korea,” says Pastor Foley. He says he wrote the book These are the Generations with Mr. and Mrs. Bae, third generation underground North Korean Christians, in order to share how North Korean underground Christians maintain and pass on their faith in a country known for its hostility to the gospel.
“The book is the amazing true story of how the Baes received and bravely passed on the gospel from generation to generation, through labor camp, prisons, interrogations, and the greatest challenge of all – everyday life in North Korea,” says Pastor Foley.
The book’s publisher, Voice of the Martyrs Korea, delivers more than 40,000 Bibles into North Korea annually via land, sea, and air, in addition to broadcasting four daily shortwave radio programs into North Korea and doing discipleship training programs for North Koreans wherever they are found. The ministry also serves Christians persecuted for their faith in more than 70 other countries around the world.
“Often when I arrive at a church to preach, the pastor and congregation members will tell me with tears in their eyes that they are praying for the day when North Korea will open to the gospel,” says Pastor Foley. “I tell them the good news that the Lord has already answered their prayers: the Lord has always maintained faithful witnesses to his word in North Korea. I tell them that what we need to pray is that the boldness and faith of underground North Korean Christians will revive the church in South Korea, America, and other countries around the world where the church is in decline.”

These are the Generations is available for free this month to South Korean Christians.
Pastor Foley says that churches and ministries should commit to spreading the gospel today inside North Korea, primarily through the distribution of the Bible in partnership with North Korean underground Christians.
“North Korean ministry isn’t something we just pray about and plan for in the future,” says Pastor Foley. “The North Korean Human Rights Database, an independent data-gathering NGO, has been conducting an ongoing study where they found that in the year 2000, effectively 0% of people inside North Korea had ever seen a Bible with their own eyes. They have continued to update that study, and at the end of 2020 they determined that around 8% of people inside of North Korea have now seen a Bible with their own eyes,” says Pastor Foley. He adds that a separate study released in June 2021 by the Center for the Study of Global Christianity (CSGC) at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary estimated that more than 6% of North Koreans inside North Korea have had personal contact with a Christian.
Pastor Foley hopes by offering the These are the Generations book for free to South Korean Christians this month that readers can gain new vision and understanding for what is happening in North Korean gospel ministry today. “We want South Korean Christians to have accurate information about the gospel ministry God is already doing inside North Korea today,” says Pastor Foley. “We don’t want them to think that North Korea gospel ministry is something that can only happen once North Korea opens politically.”
Voice of the Martyrs Korea’s These are the Generations book has been translated and published in Korean, English, Dutch, Portuguese, Polish, Czech, and Chinese. Pastor Foley says the book will be available in Russian and several Central Asian languages in 2025.
Pastor Foley says individuals requesting the free book from Voice of the Martyrs Korea will also receive a free subscription to the ministry’s monthly newsletter, as well as the ministry’s free annual prayer desk calendar. “We look forward to introducing Korean Christians not only to the story of underground Christians in North Korea but also the stories and urgent prayer requests of underground Christians in the more than 70 countries where Christians are persecuted for their faith,” says Pastor Foley.
Individuals interested in receiving the free These are the Generations book, Voice of the Martyrs Korea newsletter subscription, and persecuted Christian daily prayer desk calendar can call or text their full name and address to 010-8844-2065 during the month of October.
