[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_column_text]According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u00a0<\/span><\/span>board chair<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Hyun Sook Foley, 104 of these girls were released in March, but five reportedly died during captivity.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLeah\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sharibu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0was the only girl who was not released in March,\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cReportedly, she was kept because she refused to convert from Christianity to Islam.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

VOMK representative Foley adds that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sharibu\u2019s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0father, Nathan\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Sharibu<\/span><\/span>, has recently been\u00a0<\/span><\/span>sent\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>recording<\/span><\/span>\u00a0of his daughter\u2019s voice<\/span><\/span>\u00a0from her captors<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row overlay_dotted=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]Nathan\u00a0Sharibu\u00a0told BBC Pidgin,<\/p>\n

\u201cIt really is her voice. Before, I thought she wasn\u2019t even alive.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cUnfortunately, cases like Leah\u00a0Sharibu\u2019s\u00a0are not rare for Nigerian Christians,\u201d said VOMK representative Foley.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlthough Christians in Southern Nigeria experience religious freedom, there are still many Islamic Extremist groups. Boko Haram, a terrorist group affiliated with al-Qaida and Islamic state, regularly attacks Christians and is believed to be behind increasing attacks on Christian village by Muslim Fulani tribes.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Globally,\u00a0Voice of the Martyrs has been working with persecuted Christians like the\u00a0Sharibu\u00a0family for more than 13 years. Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u00a0board chair\u00a0Foley\u00a0says there are important lessons that can be drawn from\u00a0Leah\u00a0Sharibu\u2019s\u00a0imprisonment.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOften, when we hear about the suffering of our persecuted brothers and sisters around the world, we\u2019re tempted to throw money at their problems\u00a0or demand government intervention\u00a0until they\u2019re solved,\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

VOMK\u00a0board chair\u00a0Foley said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut\u00a0one of our Voice of Martyrs directors who spent more than a year in prison reminds us, \u2018It is God who holds the key to every prison cell.\u00a0We must be faithful to pray\u00a0daily\u00a0for Leah\u00a0Sharibu\u00a0and the Nigerian church, and we must trust that God is working\u00a0good\u00a0even through her detainment.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
