Deacon Zhang, who ministered to North Koreans in Changbai, China alongside martyred Pastor Han Chung-Ryeol, served more than 12 years of a 15 year sentence. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left|color:%23111111″ google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”” el_class=”headline”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]\u201c<\/span>Deacon <\/span>Zhang,<\/span> is an ethnically Korean Chinese citizen <\/span>who was kidnapped in <\/span>November 2014<\/span> from China and <\/span>put in a North Korean prison<\/span>,\u201d says Voice of the Martyrs Korea representative Dr. Hyun Sook Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>We believe the reason for his kidnapping was to gather information about the North Korean ministry work we were doing with Pastor Han.\u201d <\/span>Fifteen months <\/span>after <\/span>Deacon <\/span>Zh<\/span>ang\u2019s kidnapping and arrest<\/span>, Pastor Han was lured from his home and stabbed to death in <\/span>Changbai<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Voice of the <\/span>Martyrs<\/span> Korea led a multi-year global letter campaign urging the North Korean government to release Deacon Jang.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Though it is illegal to cross into China without permission, North Koreans often visit Chinese border towns to purchase goods to resell in North Korea, seeking medicine or other help, and conducting business<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Near <\/span>Changbai<\/span>, North Koreans gather herbs on the North Korean side of the mountain, then take them into <\/span>Changbai<\/span> to sell at the market and bring the money back with them to North Korea.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Representative Foley sa<\/span>ys<\/span> that <\/span>Deacon <\/span>Zh<\/span>ang regularly hosted <\/span>these <\/span>North Korean<\/span> visitor<\/span>s in his home for days and weeks at a time before they returned to North Korea, giving them warm clothing, feeding <\/span>them<\/span> and providing things they might need for their return to North Korea. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>He saw this as his Christian duty to welcome the stranger, clothe the naked and care for the sick<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>As a believer, he also shared about his faith to those who were willing.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Representative Foley says that a<\/span> number of these North Koreans accepted the message and became Christians. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Some returned to Deacon Jang\u2019s home repeatedly for more Bible training, and Deacon <\/span>Zh<\/span>ang and Pastor Han also taught them how to share their faith with their loved ones.
