[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”55814″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”A Chinese pastor accused of \u201cillegal preaching\u201d and \u201cordination activities\u201d has been detained by authorities for more than two months, with authorities preventing him from reading his Bible or receiving postcards from his wife and children. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left|color:%23111111″ google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”” el_class=”headline”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea and its US-based partner organization China Aid, <\/span>Pastor <\/span>Huang <\/span>Yizi<\/span> of <\/span>Fengwo<\/span> Church in <\/span>Pingyang<\/span> County, Wenzhou, Zhejiang, <\/span>has been held at a detention center since July 30.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Pastor Huang <\/span>first ran into trouble with authorities in 2014 when he<\/span> was jailed for a year for <\/span>openly oppos<\/span>ing <\/span>the Chinese government\u2019s removal of crosses from Wenzhou churches<\/span>. At that <\/span>time<\/span> he withdrew his church from the government-run Three-Self Church Association. <\/span>After <\/span>his release from prison, <\/span>Pastor Huang was <\/span>quickly re-arrested and then <\/span>sent to a so-called \u201cblack jail<\/span>\u201d<\/span>.<\/span> He was detained for five months at the jail, allegedly <\/span>for <\/span>endangering national security. During <\/span>that <\/span>time<\/span> he <\/span>was denied access to his family and his attorney.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”55813″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Voice of the Martyrs <\/span>Korea <\/span>Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley says that after Pastor Huang signed the so-called <\/span><\/span>China Declaration<\/span><\/span><\/a> statement of faith <\/span>in 2018 <\/span>along with 438 other Chinese pastors, he has been under regular surveillance by authorities and faced <\/span>numerous<\/span> interrogations. <\/span>She says that m<\/span>ost recently<\/span> Pastor Huang was accused of \u201cillegal business operations\u201d for selling recordings of his sermons. Then on July 30 he was arrested and taken to the detention center on charges of \u201cillegal preaching\u201d and \u201cordination activities\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Representative Foley says that Pastor Huang is being held under <\/span>strict conditions, <\/span>unable to <\/span>read the Bible<\/span> or correspond with his family.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>When Attorney Yuan <\/span>visited <\/span>Pastor Huang at the detention center,<\/span> they came to realize that Pastor Huang had not been given <\/span>postcards <\/span>that <\/span>his wife and children<\/span> had sent, and Pastor Huang<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s family had not received the letters he wrote to them,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says Representative Foley. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Likewise, Attorney Yuan mailed Pastor Huang<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s Bible to the detention center, but authorities there did not give it to Pastor Huang.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”55824″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Pastor Huang Yizi, during an earlier detention ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230a0101|line_height:1.45em” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Representative Foley says that i<\/span>n response to this issue, his family has <\/span>called prisoner treatment hotlines to express their concerns, and Attorney Yuan has filed paperwork <\/span>on the matter with <\/span>city- <\/span>and county-level <\/span>officials, as well as <\/span>the Wenzhou Public Security Bureau, but no response<\/span>s have <\/span>yet been received.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201cIn his briefings to the authorities, Attorney Mao <\/span>correctly<\/span> noted that the Chinese constitution guarantees citizens, including prisoners, <\/span>freedom of correspondence<\/span> on <\/span>matters not related to their legal case,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>As regards<\/span> the postcards sent to Pastor Huang, it would have been <\/span>very <\/span>easy<\/span> for authorities to see that everything the family had written was entirely personal. <\/span>Likewise, <\/span>Pastor Huang\u2019s letters to his family <\/span>contained<\/span> o<\/span>n<\/span>ly expressions of care and longing for them, entirely unrelated to his <\/span>legal <\/span>case.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201c<\/span>On August 26, <\/span>Attorney Yuan sent Pastor Huang <\/span>his Bible by <\/span>mail<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cPostal records show that the <\/span>detention center signed <\/span>that they received the delivery, but <\/span>Pastor Huang still has not <\/span>been given his Bible.\u201d She says that Attorney Yuan raised the matter <\/span>to<\/span> the detention center supervisor. \u201cThe supervisor told Attorney Yuan that the situation would be reviewed and handled according to the law. But <\/span>still there has<\/span> been no action,\u201d says Representative Foley.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

However, <\/span>she says that <\/span>on September 4, the <\/span>authorities responded with a <\/span>written notice <\/span>stating<\/span> that <\/span>they considered Pastor Huang\u2019s <\/span>continued detention <\/span>\u201c<\/span>necessary\u201d<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Representative Foley says that <\/span>Pastor Huang\u2019s wife, Lin Aili, <\/span>has <\/span>expressed gratitude for public concern over the case<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]\u201c<\/span>Lin Aili <\/span>Samonim<\/span> says that <\/span>although Pastor Huang is in hardship, his heart remains filled with joy and peace, <\/span>and that he and she are <\/span>thankful for everyone\u2019s thoughts and intercessory prayers<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>She asked that everyone continue praying for Pastor Huang, that his legal rights may be safeguarded, that he may soon communicate with family and freely read the Bible, and that he may quickly regain his freedom.
