\u201c<\/span>Tiebei<\/span> Deaf Christian Church<\/span> is<\/span> one of two Christian churches banned <\/span>as \u2018illegal organizations\u2019 <\/span>in <\/span>the past year<\/span> in <\/span>Jilin Province<\/span> because <\/span>they<\/span> did <\/span>not register with the government<\/span>,\u201d says Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>The \u2018church\u2019 <\/span>is just a small group <\/span>of Christians <\/span>dedicated to providing worship gatherings and fellowship for local deaf people. <\/span>But even groups like this<\/span> which <\/span>don\u2019t<\/span> fit well into the official \u2018Three-Self Church\u2019 system,<\/span> have to<\/span> go through the government\u2019s formal registration process<\/span> in order to<\/span> \u2018maintain national security and social stability<\/span>\u2019<\/span>,<\/span> according to<\/span> Communist <\/span>authorit<\/span>ies<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIt’s not just about faith,\u201d said one believer who has been involved in the deaf church. \u201cIt’s the only place where we can understand each other and comfort each other.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not only theological concerns about the government-run churches that causes Christian groups not to register,\u201d she says. \u201cMany of these \u2018churches\u2019 are just small groups of believers like the Tiebei Deaf Christian Church, which provide a service that the Three-Self Churches aren\u2019t able or interested to provide. When groups register as churches, they have to meet strict government requirements and detailed accounting standards and submit to regular government reviews. It\u2019s far too burdensome for most small groups of believers to do. Banning them as a \u2018threat to national security\u2019 or \u2018social stability\u2019 shows how much the authorities are threatened by any gathering of Christians, no matter how small.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
