[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”54712″ img_size=”full” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Voice of the Martyrs Korea and its China ministry partner, US-based China Aid, have learned that a Chinese pastor detained by authorities since 2022 has been released on bail but is now receiving treatment for a mental illness resulting from his interrogation. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left|color:%23111111″ google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”” el_class=”headline”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Pastor Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span> of the <\/span>Xi\u2019an Church of Abundance, <\/span>part of the <\/span>Chinese Gospel Fellowship<\/span> house church network, had been detained by authorities since August 2022 on charges of \u201cfraud\u201d resulting from the church receiving offerings from its members\u2014a crime under Chinese law because the church is not a government-authorized Three-Self Church.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley says that a prayer letter issued by the<\/span> Xi\u2019an Church of Abundance<\/span> last month says that the pastor was released on bail and <\/span>permitted<\/span> to return home<\/span> in April but has now had to be hospitalized due to mental and physical problems resulting from his interrogation<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Pastor Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span> and the Xi\u2019an Church of Abundance have long been subjected to persecution<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Pastor Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span> has been imprisoned multiple times. The most recent arrest occurred on August 17, 2022, when Pastor Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span>, Pastor Lian <\/span>Xuliang<\/span>, and preacher Fu Juan were arrested on suspicion of <\/span>\u2018<\/span>fraud<\/span>\u2019<\/span> and <\/span>detained for investigation at a secret government location. The prayer letter from Xi\u2019an Church says that all three had to go without food for <\/span>long periods<\/span> of time. They were beaten. They were forced to eat certain unidentified drugs. They were denied access to the bathroom for long <\/span>periods<\/span>.<\/span> Pastor Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span> was not <\/span>permitted<\/span> to sleep lying down for two years and eight months.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”54709″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” css=””][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]Representative Foley says that as <\/span>early as 2023, <\/span>Pastor <\/span>Lian <\/span>Changnian\u2019s<\/span> attorney noticed signs of mental instability in the pastor.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe attorney says when he saw Pastor Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span> again in September <\/span>2024, the <\/span>pastor\u2019s condition had become worse. <\/span>He was afraid to sleep day or night, constantly fearing he would be drugged or even strangled to death<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Although the case has yet to go to trial, <\/span>the attorney for <\/span>Pastor Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span> and the two others <\/span>was able to secure their release on <\/span>bail <\/span>in April, and they were reunited with their families. But according to Representative Foley, Pastor <\/span>Lian <\/span>Changnian<\/span> had to be taken to the hospital to be examined for mental and physical problems resulting from the investigation.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The initial medical diagnosis given by the doctors was shocking<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThey diagnosed him with <\/span>several serious psychological problems, as well as severe back problems. <\/span>So<\/span> he was admitted to the hospital for treatment last month.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
