Voice of the Martyrs had conducted a global letter writing campaign on behalf of Pastor Shen, working to ensure that he received a constant stream of encouraging letters from other believers for the duration of his imprisonment while making sure prison officials were aware that people around the world were closely monitoring the pastor\u2019s situation. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left|color:%23111111″ google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”” el_class=”headline”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text css=””]According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley, <\/span>Pastor Shen<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s<\/span> wife, son, daughter-in-law, and grandson traveled to the <\/span>prison<\/span> to pick him up.<\/span> He was released 9 months early<\/span>, and Representative Foley says he<\/span> has safely returned to his home in Nanjing.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Representative Foley says that the <\/span>early release<\/span> is especially good news due to ongoing concerns about Pastor Shen\u2019s health.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201cVoice of the Martyrs Korea and other international observers raised concerns about Pastor Shen\u2019s declining health last April,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cHe was diagnosed with high blood pressure and <\/span>has to<\/span> take blood pressure medication every day. His teeth also often ache. Before his imprisonment in 2018, Pastor Shen had an eye disease in his left eye. Due to his busy schedule, he delayed treatment, and later his left eye became completely blind, and he could only use his right eye. After being imprisoned, he was assigned <\/span>work<\/span> which was particularly taxing on the eyes in prison, so his right eye vision also significantly declined.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201c<\/span>In July of last year, his 83-year-old father passed away<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>The old man\u2019s regret was that he could not wait for his son to be released from prison. Pastor Shen\u2019s mother is 79 years old this year<\/span>.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Pastor Shen <\/span>Shaochun<\/span> was born in <\/span>Huaiyuan<\/span> County in 1966. Both of his parents were preachers who planted 4 churches. After graduation from seminary in the early 1990s, he worked part-time farming and part-time serving in the local seminary. In 2006, he was called to serve full-time. Starting in 2016, Pastor Shen <\/span>Shaochun<\/span> went to <\/span>Wa<\/span> State, Myanmar to teach and founded the \u201cLiving Water Elementary School\u201d there.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”52872″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center” css=””][vc_custom_heading text=”Pastor Shen Shaochun (holding flowers) upon his release from prison, surrounded by wife (left), son (right), daughter-in-law (far right), and grandson (front). The police traced the case back to Pastor Shen. Pastor Shen was arrested on September 30, 2018, and later brought to court for trial.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In court, Pastor Shen did not want to identify anyone, hoping that the police would release the four theology students<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>He fully admitted guilt and accepted punishment.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]Pastor Shen was eventually sentenced to seven years in prison for \u201corganizing others to illegally cross the border<\/span>\u201d.<\/span> He was scheduled for release in September 2025.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text css=””]<\/p>\n

Representative Foley cautions that prayers are often needed more after a prisoner is released than during the<\/span> imprisonment<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Former prisoners of faith often tell us that while they are in prison, the Lord feels very close to them, and then when they are released the<\/span> feel<\/span> overwhelmed by all the challenges of returning to normal life–especially when authorities are watching closely,\u201d she says. \u201c<\/span>Pastor <\/span>Shen<\/span> will need <\/span>time <\/span>to recover his health and <\/span>to <\/span>make arrangements<\/span> to meet with his wife. T<\/span>he family will need to rebuild their relationships day-to-day and discover a new \u2018normal\u2019 routine. We should pray that the family <\/span>will experience<\/span> the <\/span>Lord<\/span>\u2019s comfort and strong, safe presence<\/span>, and that they <\/span>will know how to serve him in the coming days<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
