[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”50268″ img_size=”full”][vc_custom_heading text=”At retreat centers outside Ottawa and Calgary last month, more than one hundred women from across Canada gathered together to draw their life stories on Korean-style fans, discuss previously hidden traumas, and listen attentively to workshops on \u201cletting God tell your story\u201d led by Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr. Hyun Sook Foley, author of the book, \u201cThe Hero\u2019s Journey: From Victim to Victor\u201d. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The organizer of the <\/span>Canadian <\/span>events, Voice of the Martyrs Canada\u2019s Vanessa <\/span>Brobbel<\/span>, says she wanted to bring to Canadian Christian women the same teaching <\/span>on healing from traumatic life experiences <\/span>that Representative Foley has been sharing <\/span>in workshops <\/span>with persecuted Christian women across Asia since the book\u2019s publication in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>I invited Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Foley because I believed that ordinary Christian women here in Canada need to experience the same healing that the Lord has used her to bring to persecuted Christian women in North Korea, China, and other countries,\u201d says Mrs<\/span>.<\/span> Brobbel<\/span>, <\/span>whos<\/span>e<\/span> husband is the CEO of Voice of the Martyrs Canada. \u201cThe specific challenges we experience in living our Christian lives <\/span>are of course <\/span>different in Canada than in North Korea, but the <\/span>need for <\/span>healing <\/span>from deep hurts is the same. And Representative Foley\u2019s method of <\/span>letting Christ tell your story <\/span>instead of you being the author of your own life story <\/span>is <\/span>understandable and powerful for Christian <\/span>women everywhere.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cOne of the attendees was a pastor\u2019s wife whose husband died a few years ago,\u201d says Mrs<\/span>.<\/span> Brobbel<\/span>. \u201cHer husband had abused her for more than 30 years, but she never shared this with anyone. During one of the small group discussion times after Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Foley shared her own story, the pastor\u2019s wife burst into tears and shared about the abuse for the first time. By the end of the event the woman was beaming. Her face was bright, and she said she now had a <\/span>totally different<\/span> outlook on her past and for the first time was looking forward to the future.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWe were never victims; we were always characters in God\u2019s stories, and we just didn\u2019t know it,\u201d says <\/span>Ann, a woman who <\/span>participat<\/span>ed<\/span> at the Ottawa conference. \u201cThrough the event I learned that we can really benefit from reframing our stories away from what is victimhood and toward God\u2019s perspective, which helps us understand where he\u2019s leading us, and to better understand why he took us through what we went through.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She still uses the method primarily in that work but says that since the publication of her book she has received <\/span>more and more<\/span> requests <\/span>to teach the method to Christian women in countries like Canada, Europe, and South Korea<\/span>.<\/span> Her first Korean seminar, offered by Voice of the Martyrs Korea at a location in <\/span>Muju<\/span>, will take place August 30 through September 1.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat I have come to realize is that it doesn\u2019t matter if we are from North or South Korea; every Christian needs to learn the narrative framework in which God has planned our lives to be victors’ stories,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cIf we <\/span>don’t<\/span> learn this, our stories will always be about ourselves and about the people who have hurt us. So, in these women’s conferences we are learning how to go \u2018from victim to victor\u2019 by letting God tell our story, rather than us telling it ourselves. God never gives anyone a victim\u2019s story. Because of Christ, he is turning all our stories into hero\u2019s stories. Seeing Canadian women experience that truth during these conferences has been extremely encouraging for me.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cFor years I have been living a victim\u2019s story,\u201d says Samantha, a woman who attended the Calgary event. \u201cBut now I can see that we were never victims but were always victors in Christ. <\/span>So<\/span> I feel like <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> time for me to start living as a victor.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
