Arrested more than 100 times for his work as a street evangelist in Hengyang City, Hunan Province, the evangelist has spent more than 130 days in prison on what authorities classify as administrative detention. \u201cEvangelist Chen <\/span>Wensheng<\/span> was arrested again September <\/span>1<\/span>st<\/span> for his evangelism activities,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cNormally that means they would hold him for two weeks and then release him, as they had done every time in the past. But when he was due to have been released on September 18, they instead increased the charge to<\/span> a criminal one: \u2018<\/span>organizing and financing illegal gatherings<\/span>\u2019 and kept him in prison.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”50199″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that e<\/span>ven a court trial last month did not result in his release.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cHe <\/span>was tried on April 18th in Hunan<\/span> in a courtroom with only about a dozen seats for the public,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cMost of his family and friends, including his <\/span>86-year-old<\/span> mother and his second brother, were blocked from entering the court.\u201d She says eyewitnesses counted more than 40 police officers and <\/span>30 other <\/span>communist <\/span>party security <\/span>officials surrounding the building.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u201c<\/span>The entire street where the court is located was blocked off under the pretext of a <\/span>security <\/span>drill<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”50195″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Chinese street evangelist Chen Wensheng” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230f0f0f|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal” link=”url:http%3A%2F%2Fwww.vomkorea.com%2Fen%2Fprisoner-profiles|title:www.vomkorea.com%2Fen%2Fprisoner-profiles|target:_blank”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]She says t<\/span>he trial lasted only an hour, with the prosecutor recommending <\/span>a <\/span>maximum<\/span> 3<\/span>–<\/span>year sentence.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u201cAs is often the situation with these kinds of trials, the verdict was not announced in the court, nor <\/span>has it been <\/span>made public,\u201d says Representative Foley. She says <\/span>Chen <\/span>Wensheng<\/span> is appealing the verdict<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe government appointed a public defender to serve as his lawyer, but he<\/span> basically defended himself in court<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cHe told the court that <\/span>as a person of faith, he <\/span>was<\/span> willing to suffer for his faith and <\/span>be <\/span>sentenced severely, but as a citizen, he ask<\/span>ed<\/span> the court to conduct a fair trial.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cHe carries a wooden cross displaying the words \u2018Glory to our Savior\u2019 and \u2018Repent and be saved by faith<\/span>\u2019,<\/span> and he hands out gospel tracts, even to the police who arrest him<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>says Representative Foley.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says eyewitnesses report that the evangelist was very cheerful and <\/span>peaceful <\/span>during the trial <\/span>and was friendly to the court<\/span> officials.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u201cYears ago he was a drug addict,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cWhen he heard the gospel, he was delivered from his addiction and immediately began preaching on the streets. He\u2019s been a street preacher for more than 15 years. He is a member of a small church, and yet these criminal charges and this recent trial where the building and streets were blocked off testify to the breadth of his impact.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
