[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”49881″ img_size=”full”][vc_custom_heading text=”An original musical and dance performance recounting the true story of the translation and transmission of the Bible to Korea through Scottish missionary John Ross and his Korean co-workers debuted last week at More Love Church in Suwon. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The <\/span>\u201c<\/span>John Ross Bible Historical Drama<\/span>\u201d<\/span>,<\/span> written by Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley, was performed by North Korean defector students enrolled in the ministry<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s Underground University North Korean missionary training program, as well as by Representative Foley, V<\/span>o<\/span>ice of the Martyrs Korea CEO Pastor Eric Foley, and North Korean Ministries Team Leader Pastor Trevor Foley.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to Representative Foley, the drama was twenty years in the making.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>In the mid-2000s, Voice of the Martyrs<\/span> Korea<\/span>, which believed that North Korean defectors flooding into South Korea could play an important role in North Korean missions, <\/span>started Underground University to <\/span>train North Korean defectors in the ways of North Korean underground believers<\/span> and to reach North Koreans with the gospel wherever they are found around the world,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> sa<\/span>id<\/span> Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>While running the school, I discovered that first-generation North Korean defectors (average age over 60 years old) were the main characters of North Korean ministry.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201c<\/span>There are two goals for our Bible dance therapy curriculum,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> sa<\/span>id<\/span> Representative Foley. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Our first goal was to teach our students <\/span>the <\/span>miraculous true <\/span>story of <\/span>their North Korean <\/span>ancestors<\/span>, who were the ones the Lord used along with <\/span>Missionary John Ross <\/span>to bring the word of God to Korea. The second was to use Korean dance and drama to <\/span>help<\/span> them <\/span>express their <\/span>inner feelings<\/span> and experience healing for the traumas they had experienced in their lives and in their journeys to South Korea.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201c<\/span>I think that the John Ross Bible historical drama does a great job of conveying the historical story of John Ross and the Joseon merchants’ translation of the Bible without leaving out the essential points<\/span>,\u201d said Pastor Ji<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>The Korean people who <\/span>participated<\/span> in the John Ross Bible translation were not Christians at first, and in some ways, they were people who would not have received any social attention. However, I really liked how Missionary John Ross expressed in detail through this performance <\/span>how he paid <\/span>great attention to <\/span>each and every<\/span> one of them, persevering and motivating them until the end of the book of life.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

T<\/span>here is also a performance in which the confession of a North Korean defector about the translation of the Bible is <\/span>scored to the traditional <\/span>“Jindo Arirang” <\/span>folk song <\/span>and expressed <\/span>using Korean traditional percussion instruments<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe <\/span>North Korean defector <\/span>students <\/span>in their 60s and 70s did it like professional theater actors, even though it must not have been easy for them to memorize and direct so many lines in such a short period of time<\/span>,\u201d Pastor Ji said<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Also in attendance were students from The Light School, a Christian alternative school in <\/span>Yongin<\/span>. The students had been studying Missionary John Ross and early Korean Christians when they heard that Voice of the Martyrs Korea would be performing the drama near the school.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]“Through <\/span>the <\/span>John Ross Bible Historical Drama, I have been very grateful to see how God’s Word has changed people who are mere treasures into God’s people who risk their lives to preach the Bible<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> said <\/span>Pastor Go Byeong-<\/span>ik<\/span>, the<\/span> pastor in charge of the school.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>I was impressed by the historical facts through the play, and the acting of the North Korean defector teachers was <\/span>very good<\/span> and interesting. <\/span>In particular, I<\/span> was surprised that Pastor Trevor<\/span> Foley<\/span>, who played the role of John Ross, spoke Korean so well<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span> Pastor Go<\/span> says the Light School receives the Voice of the Martyrs Korea monthly newsletter and uses it to guide students<\/span>\u2019<\/span> prayer requests for Christians in persecuted countries, as well as to support VOMK<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s annual sending of more than 40,000 Bibles per year into North Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says Voice of the Martyrs Korea plans to continue performances of the <\/span>John Ross Bible Historical Drama<\/span> throughout the <\/span>remainder<\/span> of 2024.
