\u201cThe seminaries currently in operation in South Korea provide <\/span>little to <\/span>no training for their students in how to operate in environments increasingly hostile to the church,\u201d says Pastor Eric Foley, CEO of Voice of the Martyrs Korea. \u201cUnderground Seminary brings to Korean Christians the training used to prepare leaders in the more than 70 countries around the world where Christianity is restricted or even outlawed.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to Pastor Foley, the seminary is not only for pastors.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span>\u201cIn countries where Christians are severely persecuted, churches are typically led by ordinary Christians, not pastors,\u201d says Pastor Foley, noting North Korea, China, and the Middle East as examples. \u201cBut the church is growing fastest in countries like these. That is because Christians in these countries have developed methods for quickly and quietly training all Christians to serve in hostile settings.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Pastor Foley <\/span>believes <\/span>the <\/span>culture <\/span>in Korea is <\/span>becom<\/span>ing<\/span> increasingly <\/span>less tolerant of Christianity, <\/span>but the church has been slow to develop training methods that can <\/span>operate<\/span> in settings of religious restriction. \u201c<\/span>COVID gave Korean churches a taste of what it is like to operate in a regulated or restricted environment\u2014one where they were sometimes even publicly blamed for contributing to the spread of the disease,\u201d says Pastor Foley. \u201cBut now that COVID has abated, churches have mostly returned to their pre-COVID ways of operation, simply hoping not to have experience such restrictions again and mostly trying to protect themselves through political strength. Very few churches, denominations, or seminaries have asked, \u2018How do we prepare for a future where restrictions on religion are part of life?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The seminary consists of six <\/span>two-day <\/span>sessions meeting once a month<\/span>, taught by Pastor Foley and Voice of the Martyrs Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley, with <\/span>additional<\/span> video resources from persecuted Christians around the world. T<\/span>wo geographic cohorts <\/span>are available<\/span>: One near <\/span>Pocheon<\/span> and the other near <\/span>Muju<\/span>, at private facilities. Each month\u2019s <\/span>session <\/span>begins at 7PM Friday and ends at 5PM Saturday. Food and lodging <\/span>is<\/span> included in the <\/span>500,<\/span>0<\/span>00 KRW <\/span>total cost for the six months<\/span>.<\/span> The first <\/span>Pocheon<\/span> session will be held April 12-13, with the first <\/span>Muju<\/span> session held April 26-27.<\/span> The other dates are shown in the accompanying graphic.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cT<\/span>he idea of Christians going to a seminary campus for three or four years of full-time training would be unthinkable in many countries around the world where the church is already facing restrictions<\/span>,\u201d says Pastor Foley.<\/span> \u201cEven the effort to bring Christians from persecuted countries to Korea for years of training at Korean seminaries has not produced leaders who are able to return to their countries and <\/span>operate<\/span> effectively in hostile environments. Instead, short, intensive, local monthly meetings like what we are offering through Underground Seminary ha<\/span>ve <\/span>proven to be the most effective training method. We are happy to bring this training to Korea for the development of the next generation of Korean Christian leaders.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Pastor Foley says that each month\u2019s curriculum will be built around the \u201cApostolic Proclamation\u201d\u2014the six core confessions that formed the preaching of Christ and the Apostles in the New Testament and which became codified for the church in the Apostles and Nicene Creed. He lists those confessions as follows:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. When the time was fulfilled, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born of the seed of David.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Christ died for our sins as according to the Scriptures.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. He was buried.<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. He rose on the third day as according to the Scriptures.<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father.<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    \u201cThe focus of Underground Seminary is teaching church leaders how to keep the church functioning in the face of persecution,\u201d says Pastor Foley. \u201c<\/span>From the time of the Apostles through the Protestant Reformers to the earliest Korean Christians until today, <\/span>what has kept the church functioning is its <\/span>full and faithful confession of <\/span>who <\/span>Christ<\/span> is and what he has done<\/span>. This confession<\/span>\u2014the so-called \u2018Apostolic Proclamation\u2019\u2014has been the church\u2019s main defense against persecution,\u201d says Pastor Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>2 Timothy <\/span>1<\/span>:<\/span>1<\/span>4<\/span><\/span> tells us <\/span>that the basic responsibility of all Christians and churches is <\/span>to guard <\/span>the message <\/span>we\u2019ve<\/span> been given. <\/span>In order to<\/span> guard it, we <\/span>have to<\/span> know it deeply. <\/span>Today more than ever, Korean Christians and church leaders need to return to the full and faithful confession of Christ.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
