\u201c<\/span>Russia could provide needed resources and technology to aid <\/span>North Korea<\/span> in <\/span>jam<\/span>ming<\/span> foreign radio <\/span>broadcasts<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Foley\u2019s organization currently airs f<\/span>our<\/span> daily shortwave radio broadcasts into North Korea. She says those broadcasts <\/span>faced <\/span>increased jamming <\/span>efforts <\/span>in 2023<\/span>. Now, she and her team are preparing for even greater challenges in 2024.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Jamming radio broadcasts is expensive, since it requires large amounts of electricity,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cNorth Korea\u2019s increased <\/span>j<\/span>amming efforts in 2023 are noteworthy since more jamming means higher cost<\/span>, and they are willingly paying this higher cost even as other areas of their economy suffer<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley notes that advanced Russian jamming technology could potentially enable North Korea to jam more while spending less, thus reducing ordinary North Koreans<\/span>\u2019<\/span> covert access to foreign radio broadcasts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cRussia <\/span>began regular jamming of foreign radio broadcasts in 1948 and by all estimates spent tens of millions of dollars on electricity for jamming throughout the Cold War period,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThey developed increasingly efficient and sophisticated jamming strategies which they continue to use today, for example, to try to jam Ukrainian radio communications. <\/span>Jamming technology may be of interest to <\/span>North Korean <\/span>authorities, given the high volume of jamming they do.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cSome of the largest broadcasters struggle because even though their signals may be very strong, they are not able to adjust them,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>So<\/span> if <\/span>there\u2019s<\/span> enough electricity, their signal can be partially or completely jammed. But when jamming is <\/span>attempted<\/span> against our broadcasts, our broadcast engineers <\/span>are able to<\/span> detect it quickly and <\/span>make adjustments to<\/span> bypass or limit the effectiveness of the jamming.\u201d She says the organization\u2019s effectiveness in countering North Korea\u2019s rising jamming efforts is \u201cpartly experience, partly technology, but mostly prayer.\u201d She asks Christians to join Voice of the Martyrs Korea in what she calls \u201cprayer-jamming the government jamming<\/span>\u201d.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cPrayer can \u2018jam\u2019 the government\u2019s technical jamming efforts, so we should pray for the Lord to grant a clear signal for each of our <\/span><\/span>f<\/span>our<\/span><\/span> gospel radio broadcasts every day,\u201d she says.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley<\/span> says that even though increased jamming presents new challenges for her organization to overcome<\/span>, <\/span>she considers the jamming efforts a good <\/span>sign.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cIncreased jamming means that the broadcast is <\/span>working<\/span>,\u201d said Representative Foley.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She says that<\/span> quick-response countermeasures based on daily <\/span>broadcast <\/span>monitoring and analysis<\/span> have significantly mitigated the jamming efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Voice of the Martyrs Korea broadcasts <\/span><\/span>f<\/span>our<\/span><\/span> daily <\/span>30-minute-long<\/span> shortwave radio programs. <\/span>Each program <\/span>contains<\/span> r<\/span>eadings of the North Korean dialect Chosun Bible by North Korean voice actors, sermons from early Korean Christians<\/span> read by Voice of the Martyrs Korea volunteers<\/span>, and hymns that are popular among North Korean underground Christians, sung by North Koreans. \u201cWe do not publicly announce the radio frequencies or broadcast times for security reasons,\u201d says Representative Foley, \u201cAnd we regularly change the radio frequencies and broadcast times in order to address jamming efforts.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that Voice of the Martyrs Korea has received confidential reports from radio industry sources that as many as 10% of the North Korean population may have been exposed to its broadcasts. Representative Foley says that North Korean defectors arriving in South Korea will sometimes comment to her about the broadcasts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley also requests prayers for the broadcasts\u2019 listeners.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Pray for <\/span>all <\/span>N<\/span>orth Koreans who hear the gospel, even today,\u201d she says. \u201c<\/span>Listening to the <\/span>gospel <\/span>on <\/span>s<\/span>hortwave radio is extremely dangerous<\/span>,<\/span> and yet we know that <\/span>only <\/span>God\u2019s <\/span>w<\/span>ord <\/span>can <\/span>bring true life<\/span> to those living in danger<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
