The video, called \u201cHow to Report Illegal Religious Activities\u201d, was released in December by the Guangzhou Municipal Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][vc_column_text]According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley, the video simulates the process of a <\/span>woman reporting a <\/span>man<\/span>\u2019s covert Christian activities to the bureau<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u201c<\/span>Guangdong <\/span>Province <\/span>authorities<\/span> have been urging citizens to report underground activities for years,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cSince 2019 the government\u2019s policy <\/span>there <\/span>has been to <\/span>pay members of the public for information on illegal religious activity and for helping to investigate it.\u201d According to Representative Foley, rewards are higher when religious activities involve foreign Christian organizations.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Voice of the Martyrs Korea has verified that the Guangzhou <\/span>video <\/span>shows a Chinese man <\/span>participating<\/span> in an \u201cEnglish corner\u201d organized by foreigners. <\/span>Members of the group are shown making prayer gestures in dim light. The Chinese man then <\/span>indicates<\/span> that they will organize team-building activities overseas.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”48759″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The video implies that the <\/span>\u2018<\/span>English corner<\/span>\u2019<\/span> is just a cover for <\/span>foreigners\u2019 illegal <\/span>religious activities<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cShe receives a reward<\/span>, smile<\/span>s, and says it is her \u2018<\/span>relationship fund<\/span>\u2019\u2014which means <\/span>money saved and used specifically for dating<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The video then shows a member of the <\/span>religious bureau<\/span> explaining that <\/span>if <\/span>citizens in Guangzhou suspect illegal <\/span>religious activities they can report <\/span>it <\/span>by phone, mail, or in person<\/span> and<\/span> receive a reward.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to the Guangzhou Ethnic and Religious Affairs Bureau<\/span>\u2019s <\/span>\u201cMeasures for Rewarding the Masses for Reporting Illegal Religious Activities<\/span>\u201d<\/span>,<\/span> reward<\/span>s<\/span> may be given for <\/span>reporting activities related to religious extremism, endangering national security, engaging in terrorist activities, disrupting social order<\/span>, <\/span>establishing<\/span> venues for religious activities<\/span> without permission, and conducting <\/span>unauthorized religious education and training activities.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The measures say that<\/span> citizens <\/span>who provide information and <\/span>assist<\/span> in investigating <\/span>illegal religious activities involving non-foreign religious organizations are eligible for rewards ranging from 1,000 to <\/span>3,000 CNY (approx. 180,000 to 550,000 KRW), while citizens reporting on and helping with investigation of foreign religious organizations may receive between <\/span>3,000<\/span> and 10<\/span>,000<\/span> CNY (approx. 550,000 to 1,800,000 KRW).\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”48761″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”(file photo) Christian house church raided by undercover police, undated. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230f0f0f|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that although the reward program has been in place for years, the release of the video may <\/span>indicate<\/span> government efforts to stimulate more reporting amidst a lack of public participation in the program.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cWhy advertise unless the program is not as effective as the government wants it to be?\u201d Representative Foley asks. \u201c<\/span>I think it<\/span> shows that members of the <\/span>general public<\/span> know that Christian activity is not a threat to Chinese national security or <\/span>Chinese culture. Even reward money <\/span>can\u2019t<\/span> get citizens to <\/span>treat their Christian neighbors as criminals<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
