\u201c<\/span>Especially we are called to <\/span>remember the widows and orphans<\/span> whose husbands and fathers were martyred<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>.<\/span> \u201c<\/span>If we don\u2019t equip them to support themselves, <\/span>then they, <\/span>their children, and other<\/span> Christian<\/span>s in the community<\/span> quickly become second-class citizens in these Muslim majority areas, and the church becomes weaker and weaker there.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that <\/span>SDOK, Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u2019s sister mission in the Netherlands, <\/span>worked with local <\/span>Christian leaders to <\/span>provid<\/span>e<\/span> sewing <\/span>and griding machines<\/span> to 30 Christian widows through a 10,000 USD grant from Voice of the Martyrs Korea donors. The widows also received daily spiritual support along with <\/span>training on how to <\/span>use their new machines to run self-supporting businesses.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]A<\/span>ccording to Representative Foley, <\/span>the results exceeded <\/span>expectations<\/span>. \u201cThe economic benefits from these widows\u2019 new businesses are already aiding other Christians in need in the community,\u201d <\/span>says Representative Foley. It has removed the burden of providing for my<\/span> children and encouraged me to stand firmly in my faith. Now I am also training two orphaned children for free to help them sustain themselves.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dorcas (last name withheld for security reasons), age 28, wrote, \u201c<\/span>Life has been difficult after my husband was killed in a Fulani attack. The training and the start-up package have kindled hope in me. I can now support my family from the income I make through this business. I am very grateful to God.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]A report earlier this year from the <\/span>International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety)<\/span>, located in Nigeria, says that more than 5,000 Nigerian Christians were killed in 2022 and an additional 1,000 were killed in the first three months of 2023. The report lists <\/span>Adamawa<\/span> state<\/span>, the location of the Voice of the Martyrs Korea-funded project,<\/span> as one of the areas hardest hit.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”48661″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Facilitator instructs Nigerian Christian widows in grinding at VOMK sponsored training” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230f0f0f|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Representative Foley <\/span>says <\/span>her organization\u2019s focus is to <\/span>help <\/span>Christians <\/span>who <\/span>choose to <\/span>stay in the setting of persecution<\/span>, rather than those who flee<\/span>. \u201c<\/span>Often w<\/span>hen <\/span>Korean Christians and NGOs <\/span>hear about <\/span>persecuted Christians, their first thought is<\/span> to help them escape<\/span> to<\/span> somewhere safe<\/span>.<\/span> But when a whole community of Christians is persecuted, <\/span>like in <\/span>Adamawa state<\/span>, <\/span>relocating <\/span>a <\/span>whole <\/span>Christian <\/span>community <\/span>is not<\/span> possible<\/span>. <\/span>And i<\/span>f some Christians flee<\/span> or are relocated<\/span>, those who remain <\/span>often <\/span>face greater persecution,<\/span> since it makes attackers <\/span>even <\/span>bolder. The regrettable outcome is that <\/span>the <\/span>witness to the gospel <\/span>is silenced<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>That is the tragedy we are seeing in <\/span>places like Syria<\/span>, Iraq, and parts of India<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>The Christian communities there are <\/span>rapidly <\/span>disappearing. <\/span>Other <\/span>NGOs often <\/span>provide funds to help Christians relocate and build a new life as refugees in another country<\/span>. But there is very little aid for Christians who feel called to stay <\/span>and testify to Christ <\/span>in a place of adversity.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIt is easy to see how <\/span>providing the sewing <\/span>and grinding <\/span>machines and training to the widows <\/span>help<\/span>s<\/span> to stabilize and restore the Christian community <\/span>after an attack,\u201d she says. \u201c<\/span>Projects like this show the world that <\/span>when <\/span>Christians <\/span>are attacked, they <\/span>can do something other than flee or fight. They can <\/span>respond in <\/span>patient <\/span>faith, knowing that God can give them a new life right where they are<\/span>, with the support of other believers around the world<\/span>.<\/span> That is the powerful witness to the gospel which these <\/span>Nigerian <\/span>Christian widows are making.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
