Those were the remarks of Pastor Eric Foley, CEO of Voice of the Martyrs Korea, at last week\u2019s Taiwan International Religious Freedom Summit (TIRF). The event was attended by more than 200 NGO leaders and government officials, including Taiwan\u2019s Vice President Lai Ching-Te, President of the Legislative Assembly You Si-Kun, former US Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback, and members of parliament from Japan, Europe, Nigeria, and South and Southeast Asia. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][vc_column_text]The event was the third-ever Taiwan International Religious Freedom Summit, <\/span>organized<\/span> by the International Religious Freedom Secretariat, <\/span>the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan, <\/span>and <\/span>US <\/span>NGO <\/span>China<\/span> Aid<\/span>. It was the first time North Korean religious freedom was included in the agenda<\/span>, with organizers selecting Pastor Foley to give the address<\/span>.<\/span> Pastor Foley was also asked to pray for persecuted believers at Taiwan\u2019s National Prayer Breakfast, held concurrently.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Former Ambassador-at-Large for International Religious Freedom Sam Brownback told <\/span>attendees<\/span> that those in the Grand Hotel in Taipei were some of the premier <\/span>global <\/span>leaders for religious freedom.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley, <\/span>who was also <\/span>publicly <\/span>welcomed<\/span> at the event, <\/span>Ambassador Brownback also expressed in personal remarks <\/span>to Voice of the Martyrs Korea <\/span>that he had recently visited Korea to promote <\/span>the idea of Korea hosting its own International Religious Freedom Summit in coordination with the International Religious Freedom Secretariat. \u201c<\/span>The ambassador said that progress toward a Korean summit has so far been slow,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cHe <\/span>noted that the religious freedom summits exist for the purpose of bringing together the people in a country from all the different religions to <\/span>jointly <\/span>promote religious freedom, but that that kind of inter-faith cooperation <\/span>generally takes <\/span>time to develop in <\/span>a country.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”47922″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Voice of the Martyrs Korea CEO Pastor Eric Foley and Representative Dr. Hyun Sook Foley are welcomed by attendees at the Taiwan International Religious Freedom Summit” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230f0f0f|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”47924″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Voice of the Martyrs Korea CEO Pastor Eric Foley addresses attendees at the Taiwan International Religious Freedom Summit ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230f0f0f|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Pastor Eric Foley\u2019s address at the event followed a panel discussion <\/span>on <\/span>trans-national repression of religious freedom, the growing trend of governments to cooperate across national borders to restrict freedom of religion <\/span>or belief.<\/span> Pastor Foley described <\/span>the restriction of the religious freedom of <\/span>North Korea<\/span>ns by North Korea and its neighbor countries<\/span> as \u201cExhibit A\u201d of the <\/span>trend<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cIn North Korea\u2019s 2014 response to the United Nations Human Rights <\/span>Council, it claimed that missionaries serving North Koreans in Northeast China were committing \u2018<\/span>terrorist acts<\/span>\u2019,\u201d said Pastor Foley in his <\/span>speech<\/span>. \u201cThen two years later a team of North Korean operatives killed our <\/span>Voice of the Martyrs Korea <\/span>team member <\/span>and Korean Chinese citizen <\/span>Pastor Han Chung <\/span>Ryeol<\/span> in Changbai, China for his gospel <\/span>and humanitarian aid <\/span>ministry to North Koreans <\/span>who were <\/span>going back and forth across the North Korea\/Chinese border. <\/span>The killers were never pursued or brought to justice. <\/span>Today, even the smallest efforts by Chinese churches to <\/span>meet the religious or humanitarian needs of <\/span>North Koreans <\/span>continue to be punished<\/span> more and more<\/span> harshly by the Chinese government as criminal offenses.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]In his speech, <\/span>Pastor Foley noted that <\/span>it <\/span>remains<\/span> illegal to get a Bible in any form into North Korea from any neighboring country<\/span>. Still, he said that <\/span>Voice of the Martyrs Korea<\/span> continues to work with underground North Korean Christians <\/span>to get Bibles into North Korea, with requests from North Koreans for Bibles doubling each year during the pandemic.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The North Korean Human Rights Database, an independent data-gathering NGO, did a study where they found that in the year 2000, effectively 0% of people inside North Korea had ever seen a Bible with their own eyes<\/span>,\u201d said Pastor Foley in his speech<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>They have continued to update that study, and at the end of 2020 they determined that around 8% of people inside of North Korea have now seen a Bible with their own eyes.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

How do they live their Christian life? Defenders of religious freedom need to understand that North Korean Christians are not simply waiting around to be persecuted. They are living faithful Christian lives daily.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Pastor Foley noted that the most common religious activity among North Korean Christians\u2014listening to Christian programs on the radio\u2014has not been mentioned in most international religious freedom reports. \u201cWhen North Korean underground Christians were under lockdown in North Korea, they asked us to add radio broadcasts in the daytime,\u201d said Foley. \u201cWe have been broadcasting three times every night, but at their request we added two broadcasts every daytime.\u201d He added that the increased attempts by the North Korean government to jam Christian broadcasts should be noted as restrictions on religious freedom.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Pastor Foley prefaced his prayer for persecuted believers at the Taiwan National Prayer Breakfast by underscoring the importance of asking persecuted believers how they want to be prayed for. \u201cWe should not pray for them to become like us,\u201d said Pastor Foley. \u201cWe should not pray for them the way we think they should be prayed for.
