[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”47409″ img_size=”full”][vc_custom_heading text=”The wife and son of Dr. Li Baiguang, the Chinese human rights attorney who died under suspicious circumstances in 2018, have escaped to the United States, according to the Christian nonprofit groups ChinaAid and Voice of the Martyrs Korea. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][vc_column_text]Hanmei<\/span> \u201cHannah\u201d <\/span>Xu and <\/span>Qingxin<\/span> \u201cPure Heart\u201d <\/span>Li<\/span> arrived in the United States last month and are presently seeking asylum, according to representatives of the two groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Li <\/span>Baiguang<\/span>, <\/span>known for his self-described \u201cant strategy\u201d of traveling around China to take up hundreds of individual cases defending the religious freedom and human rights of ordinary citizens<\/span>, rose to prominence internationally after receiving an <\/span>award from the Washington-based National Endowment for Democracy in 2008<\/span> and being invited for <\/span>three visits with then-<\/span>U.S. <\/span>President George <\/span>W. <\/span>Bush<\/span>. <\/span>B<\/span>oth his wife and <\/span>young <\/span>son were summoned to <\/span>the <\/span>police station for interrogation <\/span>by Chinese authorities <\/span>in <\/span>S<\/span>ummer 2015. <\/span>In October 2017, <\/span>Dr. Li reported to international observers that he had <\/span>been abducted, beaten, and threatened with dismemberment by Chinese officials in Zhejiang province for defending farmers whose land <\/span>had been <\/span>seized by the government<\/span>. Then on February <\/span>25, 2018<\/span>, <\/span>Dr. Li was <\/span>pronounced dead at a Chinese government military hospital in Nanjing, hours after allegedly checking in for a stomach complaint. The hospital said he had bled to death due to a liver condition. But Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Li, who was 49 <\/span>at the time of his deat<\/span>h, <\/span>was <\/span>reported <\/span>by friends and colleagues to have been in good health<\/span> immediately<\/span> prior to the announcement of his death.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Since<\/span> Dr. Li\u2019s <\/span>sudden death in early 2018, <\/span>his wife, <\/span>Hanmei<\/span> Xu<\/span>, <\/span>has been closely controlled and monitored without freedom of movement by agents <\/span>arranged by the Communist Party of China <\/span>in order to prevent her from having contact with <\/span>anyone <\/span>overseas<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says the Rev. Dr. Bob Fu, the founder and President of US-based <\/span>ChinaAid<\/span> and a long-time friend of the family.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

We thank all brothers, sisters<\/span>,<\/span> and other friends of the international community who have been praying and caring about Li <\/span>Baiguang<\/span> and our whole family.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea co-founder and President Dr. Hyun Sook Foley, <\/span>ChinaAid<\/span> arranged for the departure of Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Li\u2019s family from China and <\/span>is coordinating <\/span>their resettlement <\/span>and asylum process <\/span>in the US while Voice of the Martyrs Korea is <\/span>providing<\/span> the finances and <\/span>assisting<\/span> in trauma care.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Our<\/span> focus at this point is on providing comfort, support, and stability for the family,\u201d says Foley, who teaches Bible-based trauma recovery strategies to Christians who have experienced persecution for their faith. \u201c<\/span>We had the privilege of teaching persecution recovery strategies to Dr. Li, and now we have <\/span>the <\/span>privilege and heavy responsibility of <\/span>putting those <\/span>same strategies <\/span>into practice <\/span>with his wife and son.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

After <\/span>graduat<\/span>ing<\/span> from Beijing University with a <\/span>Ph.D<\/span> o<\/span>n constitutional law, he <\/span>taught <\/span>at Hainan University<\/span> for a year before being arrested for his growing involvement in <\/span>dissident circles <\/span>promoting democracy. H<\/span>e <\/span>subsequently<\/span> started a publishing business envisioning public education <\/span>in democracy through the <\/span>introduc<\/span>tion<\/span> to Chinese readers of books <\/span>translated <\/span>from the <\/span>western<\/span> liberal democratic tradition<\/span>. H<\/span>owever, he reported that <\/span>his life was drastically <\/span>changed by <\/span>read<\/span>ing<\/span> and translat<\/span>ing a <\/span>book about the persecution and perseverance of the French Protestant Huguenots in <\/span>the <\/span>17th century.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>He <\/span>publicly professed his faith in <\/span>Christ<\/span> i<\/span>n 200<\/span>5 and gave up his \u2018grand ideas\u2019 about government reform and constitutional change in favor of what he called an \u2018<\/span>ant strategy<\/span>\u2019\u201d, says <\/span>ChinaAid\u2019s<\/span> President Bob Fu.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]In his papers and presentations, Dr. Li wrote, \u201cR<\/span>ecently <\/span>I\u2019ve<\/span> had a realization: <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> willing to become an ant. I want to take the rights and freedoms in the books and<\/span>, through<\/span> case after case, bring them into the <\/span>real world<\/span> bit by bit. This is my personal stance. The path to this is legal procedure. In summer, the ant gathers food. Today, <\/span>I\u2019m<\/span> also transporting food under the framework of rights defense, and in doing so accumulating experience and results for the arrival of the day<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”47418″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Dr. Li Baiguang (second from left) during one of three invitations to visit then-U.S. President George W. Fu reported that Dr. Li remained optimistic due to his Christian faith. \u201c<\/span>He quoted Romans 13,<\/span>\u201d says Fu, \u201c<\/span>declaring <\/span>\u2018<\/span>The night is nearly over; the day is almost here.<\/span>\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Though he died a few months later under suspicious circumstances, Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u2019s Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley says<\/span> the safe arrival of Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Li\u2019s wife and son in the US is a divine sign that his optimism will be vindicated. <\/span>\u201cPsalm 146:9 says, \u2018<\/span>The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin<\/span>\u2019<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d<\/span> says Representative Foley. <\/span>\u201cThe Lord <\/span>has <\/span>upheld <\/span>Hannah and Pure Heart since February 2018.
