\u201cIncreased jamming means that the broadcast is <\/span>working<\/span>,\u201d said Representative Foley.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that research from independent private analysts shows that Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u2019s broadcasts have continued <\/span>to be among the highest-priority information blocking targets of the <\/span>North Korean authorities. She says that<\/span> quick-response countermeasures based on daily <\/span>broadcast <\/span>monitoring and analysis<\/span> have significantly mitigated the jamming efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Voice of the Martyrs Korea broadcasts five daily <\/span>30-minute-long<\/span> shortwave radio programs. <\/span>Each program contains r<\/span>eadings of the North Korean dialect Chosun Bible by North Korean voice actors, sermons from early Korean Christians<\/span> read by Voice of the Martyrs Korea volunteers<\/span>, and hymns that are popular among North Korean underground Christians, sung by North Koreans. \u201cWe do not publicly announce the radio frequencies or broadcast times for security reasons,\u201d says Representative Foley, \u201cAnd we regularly change the radio frequencies and broadcast times in order to address jamming efforts.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]She says <\/span>no one in North Korea <\/span>would <\/span>have a difficult time finding <\/span>Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u2019s <\/span>broadcast<\/span>s<\/span>, since <\/span>they are aired throughout the day<\/span> and night <\/span>on <\/span>one of the strongest shortwave signals into North Korea<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to Representative Foley, radio broadcasting remains by far the most effective and safest way to reach audiences inside of North Korea.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cConsidering North Korea\u2019s <\/span>severely restricted borders, as well as the regime\u2019s ever-tightening <\/span>\u2018<\/span>total surveillance state<\/span>\u2019<\/span> model that uses <\/span>digital tracking <\/span>similar to<\/span> the Chinese model,<\/span> shortwave radio is the safest medium for North Korean<\/span>s<\/span> to access Christian content.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that Voice of the Martyrs Korea has received confidential reports from radio industry sources that as many as 10% of the North Korean population may have been exposed to its broadcasts. Representative Foley says that North Korean defectors arriving in South Korea will sometimes comment to her about the broadcasts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”45484″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”A Voice of the Martyrs Korea volunteer records a sermon by an early Korean Christian for the ministry\u2019s daily radio broadcast into North Korea. ” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230f0f0f|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]According to Representative Foley, Voice of the Martyrs Korea uses shortwave broadcasts because they are harder for authorities to jam than medium wave (AM) radio.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cMedium wave <\/span>frequenc<\/span>ies<\/span> cannot be changed<\/span> or adjusted as easily as shortwave frequencies,\u201d she says. \u201cCompared to sustained interference against a single, fixed, more expensive medium wave broadcast <\/span>which <\/span>has to<\/span> be targeted to a narrower area,<\/span> government <\/span>interference <\/span>against shortwave broadcasts <\/span>has to<\/span> be <\/span>s<\/span>pread <\/span>out <\/span>across different portions of <\/span>each broadcast, across <\/span>different time <\/span>periods, <\/span>and across the <\/span>broader shortwave broadcast geography. That\u2019s expensive and difficult for governments, and so it enables an <\/span>even greater share of <\/span>shortwave<\/span>–<\/span>transmitted <\/span>programs <\/span>to reach North Korean<\/span>s<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that when jamming happens, Voice of the Martyrs Korea <\/span>is able to<\/span> detect it quickly and <\/span>make adjustments to<\/span> bypass or limit the effectiveness of the jamming. She says the organization\u2019s effectiveness in countering North Korea\u2019s rising jamming efforts is <\/span>\u201c<\/span>partly <\/span>experience, partly technology, but mostly prayer.\u201d She asks Christians to join Voice of the Martyrs Korea in what she calls \u201cprayer-jamming the government jamming\u201d.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Pray<\/span>er can \u2018jam\u2019 the government\u2019s technical jamming efforts, so we should pray for the Lord to grant a <\/span>clear signal for each <\/span>of our five gospel <\/span>radio broadcast<\/span>s every day,\u201d she says<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley also requests prayers for the broadcasts\u2019 listeners.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Pray for <\/span>all <\/span>N<\/span>orth Koreans who hear the gospel, even today,\u201d she says. \u201c<\/span>Listening to the <\/span>gospel <\/span>on <\/span>s<\/span>hortwave radio is extremely dangerous<\/span>,<\/span> and yet we know that <\/span>only <\/span>God\u2019s <\/span>w<\/span>ord <\/span>can <\/span>bring true life<\/span> to those living in danger<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
