The letters, dated the end of December, were written by North Korean workers in response to care packages provided by the NGO through its local workers. According to Representative Foley, the care packages contained medicine, hyg<\/span>ie<\/span>ne <\/span>items<\/span>, and <\/span>an audio Bible.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cT<\/span>he five letters <\/span>show that workers have <\/span>virtually no <\/span>practical choices available to them<\/span> to protect their health and their lives<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cOne North Korean worker wrote that they are \u2018<\/span><\/span>less free than animals\u2019 while another described themself as a \u2018slave dying helplessly\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

But they are afraid that if they escape, they will never again be able to see their family and friends inside North Korea. One worker wrote, \u2018<\/span>W<\/span>hatever it takes they’re trying to go back to Joseon\u2019.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]But according to Representative Foley, the <\/span>complete <\/span>lack of human <\/span>options <\/span>is <\/span>resulting in their being unusually open <\/span>to God.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re turning to God <\/span>and relying on him daily <\/span>even more deeply <\/span>than South Korean Christians do,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]One North Korean worker wrote, \u201c<\/span><\/span>W<\/span>e may find God more than others because the situation is very painful and difficult<\/span>.\u201d The worker added, \u201cW<\/span>hat is clear is that if we did not know God in the first place, we would have given up everything and lived a life without hope.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Karl Marx <\/span>and all the communists who followed, right up to the present day, have always dismissed religion as \u2018<\/span>the opi<\/span>um of the people\u2019<\/span>,<\/span> causing them to lose their focus on the so-called revolutionary struggle,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>But when North Koreans are sent abroad to work and they see the outside world<\/span> with their own eyes<\/span>, they realize that it is the North Korean ideology that is the opium. It has dulled their mind to the truth\u2014not only truths about economics, politics, and culture that their government has concealed from them, but also truths about God, who they quickly realize is their only hope.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley quotes one North Korean worker who wrote, \u201c<\/span><\/span>If I didn’t know the world, it would have been easier to endure, but now it’s hard to endure. All the hardships that lay upon us would leave nothing but anger and hatred.<\/span>\u201d <\/span>But t<\/span>he same worker <\/span>added<\/span>, \u201c<\/span>I talk about the Bible with my comrade every day. We’ve developed a relationship where we depend on each other for our lives. Even when we go back to Joseon, we have a plan to let our parents and brothers know the God we know.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen they hear the word of God, North Korean workers realize that the answers they are seeking can\u2019t be found by fleeing, whether to South Korea or back to North Korea,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThe answers can only be found by seeking God <\/span>today <\/span>exactly where they are.\u201d She quotes one worker who wrote, \u201c<\/span>Me and my three comrades fall in love with the Holy Spirit every day. Because it is our daily bread. God is with us every day like we breath and eat every day.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that <\/span>Voice of the Martyrs Korea supplies audio and printed North Korean dialect Bibles to North Koreans inside North Korea, as well as to North Korean laborers working abroad and North Korean sex trafficked women in China. <\/span>The Bibles are individually distributed directly to recipients, often as part of small care packages containing other items like masks, medicines, and hygiene items.
