\u201cWhen most people think of martyrs, they think of pastors and missionaries,\u201d says Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span> Hyun Sook Foley. \u201cBut Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> was <\/span>a <\/span>h<\/span>elp<\/span> d<\/span>esk <\/span>s<\/span>pecialist<\/span> and a <\/span>s<\/span>ystem <\/span>a<\/span>dministrator<\/span> for <\/span>Tech\/<\/span>Uklon<\/span>,<\/span> a<\/span> local<\/span> IT company<\/span>. <\/span>At <\/span>Irpin<\/span> Bible Church h<\/span>e <\/span>was in charge of<\/span> equipment and also <\/span>served in media ministry<\/span>, <\/span>but he was not an ordained minister.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that her organization recognizes <\/span>Berezhny<\/span> as a martyr.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>What makes <\/span>Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> a <\/span>martyr is not that he <\/span>was a Christian who <\/span>died <\/span>while <\/span>helping others. <\/span>What makes him a martyr is that according to the testimony of those who knew him, he made a deliberate decision to lay down his life for Christ<\/span>. The Lord seems to have given Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> an <\/span>understanding <\/span>that his service would lead to his death, and <\/span>Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> willingly chose that path.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

One and a half years ago <\/span>they<\/span> moved from <\/span>Severodonetsk<\/span> to the <\/span>Irpin<\/span> area<\/span> and <\/span>began to attend <\/span>Irpin<\/span> Bible Church<\/span>, where they became active members<\/span>.<\/span> When <\/span>fighting came close to their area, <\/span>Berezhny<\/span> took his wife to <\/span>a <\/span>safe <\/span>location in Western Ukraine<\/span> while he himself <\/span>returned to <\/span>Irpin<\/span> to serve <\/span>on a volunteer team organized by his <\/span>church.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]\u201cThe team helped evacuate 100 to 200<\/span> citizens<\/span> per day,<\/span> with many <\/span>of those people <\/span>referred to them by city officials,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley. According to a tribute to <\/span>Berezhny<\/span> posted on Facebook by his employer, <\/span>Berezhny<\/span> and his <\/span>fellow <\/span>volunteers drove over 400 people to safety in a two<\/span>–<\/span>day period<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cA friend of Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> who was also<\/span> on the volunteer team said that <\/span>the day before he died, <\/span>they encountered a<\/span>n armored personnel carrier on the road. They were miraculously saved by making a sharp turn into the woods and even hit a tree<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>The friend thinks that that evening<\/span>,<\/span> Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> prepared his heart for the reality of death because he was <\/span>so <\/span>quiet. <\/span>Then i<\/span>n the morning they decided to go to the city again to try to help a few more people to be evacuated.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Witnesses say <\/span>Berezhny<\/span> went to assist a woman with two children<\/span>, but the group was struck by mortar fire <\/span>and killed <\/span>about <\/span>200 meters <\/span>from the bus.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cPeople often think of martyrs as bold preachers, but <\/span>Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> is a good example of a martyr who heard the word and then did the word,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>During the funeral service, Brother <\/span>Anatoliy\u2019s<\/span> wife Diana <\/span>said that i<\/span>t was difficult for him to speak his thoughts <\/span>out loud, but that he often wrote them down in <\/span>a notebook. <\/span>She said, \u2018<\/span>He was good in listening<\/span>,<\/span> not speaking.<\/span>\u2019 <\/span>She<\/span> shared in the funeral a section on the resurrection <\/span>that Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> wrote in <\/span>one of his notebooks<\/span>, saying she believed it <\/span>explained <\/span>the reason why he did <\/span>what he did.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The note <\/span>from <\/span>Berezhny<\/span> said<\/span>:<\/span> \u201c<\/span>We must continue to work tirelessly <\/span>in <\/span>the Lord’s work precisely because we will also <\/span>be <\/span>raise<\/span>d<\/span> from the dead as Christ has risen. Everything we do to draw people to the Kingdom and strengthen their faith will be truly eternal. \u201cSeveral people at the service shared how Brother <\/span>Anatoliy<\/span> mentored the people around him <\/span>through the Bible,\u201d Representative Foley added. \u201cHis <\/span>wife <\/span>said he<\/span> always <\/span>had his headphones on<\/span>,<\/span> listening to the Bible. <\/span>She said that <\/span>often when he came home <\/span>from<\/span> work<\/span> she liked to take one of the headphones and put it in her ear<\/span>,<\/span> and <\/span>then <\/span>they would listen to God\u2019s word together.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Berezhny<\/span>, <\/span><\/span>the <\/span>fourth<\/span> of <\/span>six children<\/span>,<\/span><\/span> came from a Christian family. His grandfather was <\/span>a senior <\/span>presbyter<\/span> of Baptist churches in <\/span>the <\/span>Luhansk region<\/span> from <\/span>1995<\/span> to <\/span>2008.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Berezhny\u2019<\/span>s<\/span> father-in-law<\/span>, who noted that his and <\/span>Berezhny\u2019s<\/span> families had long been close friends, <\/span>also <\/span>spoke <\/span>at<\/span> the <\/span>funeral<\/span>.<\/span> \u201d<\/span>Someone<\/span> says it is a great joy to see your own <\/span>children <\/span>walking in <\/span>the <\/span>truth<\/span>,\u201d he said. \u201c<\/span>B<\/span>ut I would say today that it is a great joy to see children dying in <\/span>the <\/span>truth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_video link=”https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=nngaxPRaJvo”][vc_custom_heading text=”Funeral services were held on March 12 at Spring of Life Church in the city of Kremenchuk for the man Voice of the Martyrs Korea is calling \u201cUkraine\u2019s IT martyr\u201d.” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230a0a0a|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that Voice of the Martyrs Korea <\/span><\/span>sent<\/span><\/span> a love <\/span>gift<\/span> of <\/span>2,500,000<\/span><\/span> KRW <\/span>to <\/span>Berezhny\u2019s<\/span> wife from its Families of Martyrs fund. <\/span>She says <\/span>her organization<\/span> <\/span>is in the process of sending<\/span><\/span> love offerings <\/span>from the <\/span>Families of Martyrs <\/span>fund <\/span>to the wi<\/span>dows<\/span> of five Christian men from <\/span>Mariupol who died <\/span>last month <\/span>when a grenade exploded near their car after they had been bringing food and supplies to those in need<\/span>. The <\/span>five <\/span>had <\/span>led a man to the Lord after rescuing him from the basement of a burning house day<\/span>s<\/span> before they were killed<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe most basic and important ministry of Voice of the Martyrs is to care for the families of those who are martyred or imprisoned for their faith,\u201d says Representative Foley.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
