According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr. Hyun Sook Foley, they are also changing the way the villagers think about evangelical Christians.” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][vc_column_text]Daniil <\/span>Anatolyevich<\/span> Kiriluk, a Baptist <\/span>church leader<\/span> in <\/span>the village of <\/span>Novoaidar<\/span>, <\/span>60 kilometers from Lugansk<\/span>, consecrated what he calls <\/span>his <\/span>\u201c<\/span>house <\/span>of prayer<\/span>\u201d<\/span> on the day fighting began in the region in 2014<\/span>, even performing a baptism that day<\/span>.<\/span> Representative Foley says that <\/span>at that time<\/span> due to the fighting<\/span>, <\/span>many of <\/span>Brother Kiriluk<\/span>\u2019s friends <\/span>urged <\/span>him to leave the area<\/span>, but <\/span>as he prayed, the <\/span>Lord brought Numbers 16:46-48 to his mind and led him to undertake a long fast.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>[Numbers 16:46-48]<\/span> is when Israel walked in the wilderness and caused the wrath of God by their actions and the defeat began,\u201d <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk<\/span> recently told <\/span>the information portal <\/span>Vernost<\/span>. \u201cAnd Moses said to Aaron: \u2018Take a censer, pour fire from the altar into it, go and intercede for the people\u2019. Aaron went, stood between the living and the dead, and the defeat stopped. And in 2014, this story – I don\u2019t remember whether I read it or just remembered it – prompted me to stay<\/span>.<\/span> I thought who would pray for people, who would intercede for them?<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”41650″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Brother <\/span>Kiriluk said the Lord brought the same scripture to his mind again on February 24, when he and his family awoke to <\/span>the sounds of a heavy gunfire volley <\/span>in what they would later learn was <\/span>Schastie<\/span> city, 30 kilometers <\/span>away.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Just as in 2014, the <\/span>church leader<\/span> began to fast and pray <\/span>according to the scripture in Numbers.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>It so happened that the hostilities did not reach our village<\/span>,\u201d <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk<\/span> told <\/span>Vernost<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Just as it was written in th<\/span>e<\/span> word<\/span>,<\/span> the defeat ended where Aaron stood. <\/span>The soldiers did not <\/span>make it<\/span>. S<\/span>trong shells or rockets flew, but it was far from our village – maybe 12 kilometers away.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Though the conflict did not reach <\/span>Novoaidar<\/span>, it did disrupt the village\u2019s food supply.<\/span> There <\/span>is <\/span>no <\/span>bakery\u00a0<\/span> in<\/span> Novoaidar<\/span>, so it <\/span>is<\/span> reliant on bread <\/span>delivered from other cities. \u201c<\/span>Brother Kiriluk <\/span>and his family live in the house and hold worship services there,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>It\u2019s a small church<\/span>. <\/span>There are 22 members. <\/span>Half of the members are from the <\/span>church leader<\/span>\u2019s family.<\/span> Brother Kiriluk and his wife have<\/span> 10 sons, the youngest of whom is 9 years old. He has 9 daughters, <\/span>t<\/span>he oldest of whom is 31. <\/span>4 of his children are married, and they have 9 grandchildren.<\/span> Just as the conflict started in February, the family also began hosting a <\/span>Ukrainian <\/span>Christian <\/span>couple in<\/span> their home, who had left the area for Greece in 2014 when the first fighting began.<\/span> There were a lot of mouths to feed.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to <\/span>Representative Foley, <\/span>another church <\/span>in the area brought them flour<\/span>\u2014more than was needed to feed their whole family<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cThat was when <\/span>Brother<\/span> Kiriluk<\/span>\u2019s wife suggested the idea of using <\/span>the <\/span>flour to <\/span>bak<\/span>e<\/span> bread<\/span> to share with the other villagers<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>There was some disagreement at first, but <\/span>that night <\/span>they <\/span>started baking bread<\/span> using the oven in the house<\/span> church <\/span>where they live<\/span>\u201d, says Representative Foley<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]They baked<\/span> 30 loaves<\/span> of bread and posted a message to their neighbors on Viber, a social media app, that the bread was available. <\/span>P<\/span>eople began to come<\/span> right away<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”41656″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”One of Brother Daniil Anatolyevich Kiriluk\u2019s children takes the bread out of the oven. \u201c<\/span>Not only did people come to receive the bread<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Others came to bring flour to enable the group to bake more bread. <\/span>A stranger dropped off 9 bags of flour one day. <\/span>A farmer brought milk on three occasions. <\/span>A third oven was contributed. <\/span>A<\/span>nother Christian<\/span> brother and two sisters helped by baking additional bread in their own home. <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk says that at one point when yeast was no longer available in the stores, God miraculously provided so that the baking could continue.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The <\/span>church leader<\/span>\u2019s married children and grandchildren <\/span>all <\/span>help<\/span>ed<\/span>, bringing the total number of people in the home to 33.<\/span> Even the youngest son helped. \u201cHe knew how much yeast should be poured, how much flour, how much salt<\/span>,\u201d <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk<\/span> told <\/span>Vernost<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>We had scales, everything was measured on the scales, and he was already making the leaven. Then the dough was kneaded, cut into portions and the smallest one, he already knew how to do it, rolled out loaves – he did all this.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]According to <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk, production<\/span> eventually<\/span> increased to more than 160 loaves per day. <\/span>He says the group probably received in total more than one ton of <\/span>donated <\/span>flour<\/span> during the<\/span>ir<\/span> ten days of baking<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]But more than bread was distributed.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Christian couple who were visiting from Greece had brought gospel newspapers with them, so they hand<\/span>ed<\/span> these <\/span>out <\/span>to everyone who <\/span>came for bread<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThe <\/span>Christian brother <\/span>had a particular gift for evangelism, so he <\/span>share<\/span>d<\/span> the gospel along with the newspapers.<\/span> One <\/span>neighbor <\/span>who came <\/span>told him,<\/span> \u2018W<\/span>e were talking among ourselves how bad Baptists are, and now we are coming here for bread.<\/span>\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]But <\/span>perhaps<\/span> the greatest miracle may have been the government <\/span>asking <\/span>the house of prayer for help.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cW<\/span>e were called from the Ministry of Emergency Situations,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>Brother<\/span> Kiriluk<\/span> told <\/span>Vernost<\/span>. \u201c<\/span>Th<\/span>ey<\/span> said there <\/span>was<\/span> one village where people did not have bread since February 22nd. They asked if we could bake some bread. We baked as much as we could. They came and took away the bread and distributed the bread in the village. Then they called again<\/span>,<\/span> saying they were going to another village. We also baked bread, they came and took it to the village.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”41660″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Brother Daniil Anatolyevich Kiriluk, his wife, and 18 of their 19 children.” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230a0a0a|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Brother Kiriluk<\/span> and his family <\/span>recently had <\/span>to leave their home for what they thought would be only one or two days.<\/span> The time away has extended, <\/span>and <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk <\/span>says they are eager to return home as<\/span> soon as conditions permit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>Now the situation is such that you think and understand only about each next step<\/span>,\u201d says <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>We did not think <\/span>that <\/span>we would stay here. We don’t know what the next <\/span>step <\/span>will be. We planned one thing, but everything happened differently.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that <\/span>among the settings of Christian persecution in which Voice of the Martyrs Korea works, it is common for Christians to <\/span>be both <\/span>front-line workers <\/span>and displaced people at the same time. \u201c<\/span>We see this <\/span>happening today <\/span>in Tigray, in Northern Ethiopia<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>. <\/span>\u201c<\/span>We <\/span>partner <\/span>with <\/span>a <\/span>local <\/span>pastor <\/span>there, and for years <\/span>his congregation has <\/span>been the main <\/span>helpe<\/span>r for<\/span> Eritrea<\/span>n<\/span> Christian refugees <\/span>fleeing their country for Ethiopia due to persecution<\/span>. Now <\/span>our <\/span>Tigray <\/span>pastor and his church members <\/span>themselves have been displaced by the violence.<\/span> But they continue to help others.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that it is <\/span>a <\/span>pattern that <\/span>is as old as the Bible. \u201c<\/span>In <\/span>Acts 11, Christians were scattered by the persecution that broke out when Stephen was martyred. <\/span>But God used that scattering to plant the Christians like seed across the Roman Empire. And in Jeremiah, <\/span>when the people of Judah went into exile, they were commanded <\/span>by God<\/span>, \u2018Seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile\u2019. So even though we pray that God will permit <\/span>Brother <\/span>Kiriluk and his family to return home <\/span>as <\/span>soon<\/span> as possible<\/span>, we know that God is <\/span>going to continue to use them powerfully<\/span> wherever he places them<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that Voice of the Martyrs Korea is currently raising money for an ongoing emergency relief project to support local Ukrainian churches, as well as Polish and Moldovan churches along the border with Ukraine, as the local churches respond to both the humanitarian and spiritual needs that are arising during the war.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
