\u201c<\/span>In this book\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>am\u00a0<\/span>privileged to\u00a0<\/span>be able to\u00a0<\/span>tell the\u00a0<\/span>real-life\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>hero\u2019s journeys<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0of ten North Korean Christians<\/span>,\u201d says Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Foley<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>I share how\u00a0<\/span>they and\u00a0<\/span>I\u00a0<\/span>each\u00a0<\/span>learned to give up\u00a0<\/span>our \u2018<\/span>victims<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0stor<\/span>ies\u2019<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>become victor<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0in Christ<\/span>, by coming to understand how Christ tells the story of our lives.\u00a0<\/span>The book\u00a0<\/span>show<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0readers how they can experience that same transformation<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dr. Foley holds a master<\/span>\u2019<\/span>s degree in licensed clinical counseling with a specialization in trauma recovery from Colorado Christian University.<\/span>\u00a0She has worked with North Korean underground Christians and North Korean defectors\u00a0<\/span>since 2003, when she and her husband, Pastor Eric Foley, co-founded Voice of the Martyrs Korea.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201d<\/span>As North Koreans grow up, they have to memorize more than one hundred stories about Kim Il Sung\u2019s life<\/span>,\u201d says Dr Foley<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Kim Il Sung is the hero of nearly every North Korean\u2019s story.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>But when North Koreans escape their country, they learn that Kim Il Sung was no hero. They struggle to make sense of life. They quickly accept the stories that others tell them: That they are victims, or even traitors.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Foley says that\u00a0<\/span>when North Korean defectors see themselves as victims,\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>\u00a0results are\u00a0<\/span>often\u00a0<\/span>fatal<\/span>. \u201c<\/span>North Korean defectors have the highest rate of death due to suicide of any group in the world<\/span>,\u201d she says<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>That\u2019s why I\u00a0<\/span>began\u00a0<\/span>coaching North Korean defectors how to retell their stories using the\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>hero\u2019s journey<\/span>\u2019<\/span>\u00a0framework.<\/span>\u00a0It is a way of\u00a0<\/span>seeing our life\u00a0<\/span>stories\u00a0<\/span>differently than we are used to seeing them, because stories involve so many \u2018reversals\u2019\u2014events that seem tragic but are actually the gateway to\u00a0<\/span>new life.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”2\/3″][vc_single_image image=”39610″ img_size=”large” alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/6″][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Foley says that the hero\u2019s journey framework is especially meaningful to\u00a0<\/span>Christians<\/span>. \u201cThe cross of Christ is the greatest reversal in history<\/span>,\u201d she says. \u201cJesus says that anyone who follows him\u00a0<\/span>must take up their own cross. That means we should expect\u00a0<\/span>God to include\u00a0<\/span>life-changing\u00a0<\/span>reversal<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in\u00a0<\/span>each of\u00a0<\/span>our lives as\u00a0<\/span>well<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>We must come to understand God\u2019s purpose for\u00a0<\/span>these reversals,\u00a0<\/span>and we must be able to tell\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>life\u00a0<\/span>stories<\/span>, including those reversals,<\/span>\u00a0the way God tells them<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0If we don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0learn to understand and share our life stories in that way<\/span>, our stories will always have unhappy endings.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Foley says that she has seen\u00a0<\/span>the \u201chero\u2019s journey\u201d framework make a difference in the lives of North Korean defectors and North Korean Christians. \u201cEvery North Korean who participates in our schools and training programs, we have them write up their life story<\/span>\u00a0at the beginning of the training,\u201d she says. \u201cAlmost always it\u2019s a victim story, where they<\/span>\u00a0recount all of the tragedies of their lives. This is how they are taught to think of themselves, even in church. It\u2019s also how North Koreans are taught to tell their stories in books and news articles. Tragedy sells. Victimhood is popular these days.\u00a0<\/span>But then after they learn the hero\u2019s journey framework, we have them re-write their stories. They begin to see God\u2019s hand at work, turning even their worst tragedies into victories through Christ. And\u00a0<\/span>that changes them. They stop seeing themselves as needy people and instead see themselves as people loved by God who have something important to give to others: their victor\u2019s story.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Foley says<\/span>\u00a0she sees this book as part of their process of giving. \u201c<\/span><\/span>The Hero\u2019s Journey\u00a0<\/span><\/span>book is not just a book about North Korean Christians. It\u2019s a gift from North Korean Christians to the rest of us. In the book they teach us how to see our own lives differently.
