\u201cA \u2018Sunday School in a Box\u2019 is a\u00a0<\/span>digital\u00a0<\/span>Children\u2019s Bible, a video player, and a\u00a0<\/span>comprehensive\u00a0<\/span>curriculum\u00a0<\/span>packaged together so\u00a0<\/span>that an adult\u00a0<\/span>of any education level\u00a0<\/span>can use\u00a0<\/span>it\u00a0<\/span>to teach the\u00a0<\/span>whole Old and New Testament to\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>child,<\/span>\u00a0family, or neighbors<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]According to Representative Foley, t<\/span>he\u00a0<\/span>project was initially conceived\u00a0<\/span>in 2018\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>Chinese\u00a0<\/span>house church network leaders who\u00a0<\/span>were concerned about growing Chinese government crackdowns against children\u2019s ministry by both registered and unregistered churches. \u201cThese leaders asked Voice of the Martyrs\u00a0<\/span>Korea and\u00a0<\/span>our\u00a0<\/span>partner ministry China Aid\u00a0<\/span>to provide funds\u00a0<\/span>to enable Chinese Christians to assemble and distribute<\/span>\u00a0\u2018Sunday<\/span>\u00a0Schools in a Box\u2019 to\u00a0<\/span>ordinary Christian\u00a0<\/span>parents<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>So<\/span>\u00a0by\u00a0<\/span>2020<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>funding\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>distribution of the first\u00a0<\/span>set of\u00a0<\/span>5<\/span>,<\/span>0<\/span>00 boxes<\/span>\u00a0was completed<\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_single_image image=”38310″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Chinese children open up the Sunday School in a Box materials” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230a0a0a|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]The boxes proved to be so popular that\u00a0<\/span>Voice of the Martyrs Korea agreed to fund a second distribution\u00a0<\/span>of as many as 5,000 boxes\u00a0<\/span>in 2021. Representative Foley says that\u00a0<\/span>they\u00a0<\/span>continue to receive thank you letters from parents and Christian workers who received the\u00a0<\/span>first\u00a0<\/span>boxes<\/span>. She says\u00a0<\/span>the notes show that the use of the Sunday Schools in a Box has expanded beyond their original purpose<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cOriginally\u00a0<\/span>th<\/span>e request for the boxes came because Chinese\u00a0<\/span>children\u00a0<\/span>were\u00a0<\/span>being banned from church activities. But\u00a0<\/span>then the Chinese government began to use the Coronavirus as a pretext for\u00a0<\/span>banning\u00a0<\/span>church activities<\/span>\u00a0for all people<\/span>, including\u00a0<\/span>even\u00a0<\/span>online worship.\u00a0<\/span>T<\/span>hey haven\u2019t allowed\u00a0<\/span>many\u00a0<\/span>Christian activities to resume even as the\u00a0<\/span>rest of Chin<\/span>ese society<\/span>\u00a0has begun\u00a0<\/span>to<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>re-open.<\/span>\u00a0Now,\u00a0<\/span>it is not only\u00a0<\/span>children\u00a0<\/span>who are unable to attend church. W<\/span>hole families\u00a0<\/span>and congregations are<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>being\u00a0<\/span>blocked from\u00a0<\/span>organized Christian activity<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>So<\/span>\u00a0f<\/span>athers and mothers and other ordinary laypeople have had to become the leaders of the Chinese church<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Homes have once again\u00a0<\/span>had to\u00a0<\/span>become the meeting places for churches. And the Sunday Schools in a Box have become a kind of Underground Church in a Box<\/span>\u00a0for these new leaders<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Representative Foley said\u00a0<\/span>the role of Voice of the Martyrs Korea in the project\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>to provide the funding<\/span>\u00a0for\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>Sunday Schools in a Box.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cChinese house church<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>leaders use the funds we send to purchase\u00a0<\/span>legally available components from different locations in China<\/span>. The<\/span>y then<\/span>\u00a0assemble<\/span>\u00a0the Sunday Schools in a Box inside China<\/span>\u00a0and distribute<\/span>\u00a0them to recipients t<\/span>hrough\u00a0<\/span>their\u00a0<\/span>underground networks<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

According to Representative Foley, t<\/span>here is no central coordinating point<\/span>\u00a0in China for the project. \u201cA key part of the strategy is to use\u00a0<\/span>many purchasing, assembly, and distribution agents working completely independent of each other, with no knowledge of each other, spread out\u00a0<\/span>all across<\/span>\u00a0China. This way, even if one part of the network is disrupted, the rest of the work can continue without difficulty. This has enabled large-scale distribution to happen even during the Coronavirus, with boxes reaching families\u00a0<\/span>and Christian<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>even in very remote areas.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Voice of the Martyrs Korea has so far sent funds for 3,000 boxes in 2021, and it hopes to send funds for as many as 2,000 more by the end of October, according to Representative Foley. She says that each \u201cSunday School in a Box\u201d costs 75,000 KRW.
