According to Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0Hyun Sook Foley,\u00a0<\/span>the case\u00a0<\/span>signals an increase in China Communist Party intervention in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>Christian homes<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>T<\/span>he Party overrule<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0the\u00a0<\/span>parents in every aspect of a child\u2019s life<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cParents\u00a0<\/span>must act as extensions of the state or face severe punishments. In the case of\u00a0<\/span>Brother\u00a0<\/span>Zhao,\u00a0<\/span>his Christian beliefs prevent him from subjecting his children to an atheist\u00a0<\/span>public\u00a0<\/span>education. The response of the authorities was to detain him, raid his home, confiscate his homeschool materials,\u00a0<\/span>and<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>investigate him as a terrorist.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Representative Foley says that police used the investigation of\u00a0Zhao\u2019s homeschooling\u00a0to gather information about\u00a0Zhao\u2019s church. \u201cZhao is not the pastor of\u00a0Taiyuan\u00a0Xuncheng\u00a0Reformed Church,\u00a0but he\u00a0works closely with\u00a0the church\u2019s minister,\u00a0An\u00a0Yankui,\u201d says Representative Foley.\u00a0\u201cBrother Zhao and Minister\u00a0An\u00a0studied theology together in Chengdu\u00a0Huaxi\u00a0Seminary, a Christian university\u00a0founded by\u00a0Pastor Wang Yi, the pastor of Early Rain\u00a0Covenant\u00a0Church\u00a0who was sentenced to nine years in prison in December 2019.\u00a0It would appear to be a case of guilt by association.\u201d\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Minister\u00a0An\u00a0wrote, \u201cThey arrested Brother Zhao without an arrest warrant and searched his home without a search warrant. They summoned and detained him using the excuse\u00a0of homeschooling his children,\u00a0but they interrogated him about our church, completely irrelevant to the case. Until now, his family has not received any document, not even a list of items they impounded nor a detention notice. Everything remains a secret, a public secret. CCP authorities persecute God\u2019s church.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Representative Foley\u00a0agrees that\u00a0Zhao\u2019s case reveals\u00a0more than Communist Party concerns over home\u00a0schooling. \u201cFor years, the Chinese\u00a0government\u00a0tried to control Christianity by cracking down on China\u2019s\u00a0megachurches.But\u00a0Chinese churches\u00a0responded by shifting away from the\u00a0megachurch model of professional\u00a0pastors and Christian educators\u00a0to a\u00a0home-based model where\u00a0Christian parents like Zhao and Li\u00a0take the primary responsibility\u00a0for the evangelism and discipleship of their children.\u00a0The Chinese government knows that it is the home-based model, not the megachurch model, that is the future of the Chinese church.\u00a0So\u00a0they are devoting more and more state resources to\u00a0cracking down on Christian parents.\u00a0As Christians in the rest of the world, we need to\u00a0devote more of our resources to supporting Chinese Christian parents like Zhao and Li.\u00a0They are\u00a0the\u00a0new\u00a0\u2018front line\u2019 of the Chinese church.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
