\u201c<\/span>Th<\/span>is<\/span>\u00a0international call for help from Intersociety\u00a0<\/span>arises\u00a0<\/span>from the\u00a0<\/span>shocking\u00a0<\/span>reality that\u00a0<\/span>not a single Fulani has\u00a0<\/span>yet\u00a0<\/span>been arrested for any of these 500 deaths,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>International observers, including\u00a0<\/span>former US Congressman Frank Wolf,\u00a0<\/span>the sponsor of the International Religious Freedom Act (IRFA)<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>are raising\u00a0<\/span>the<\/span>ir<\/span>\u00a0concern<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0that Nigerian authorities at national, state, and local levels seem either unwilling or unable to\u00a0<\/span>halt\u00a0<\/span>the\u00a0<\/span>present wave of violence.\u201d Representative Foley says that Wolf testified at\u00a0<\/span>a June 9 hearing of the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom<\/span>\u00a0(USCIRF)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>that in his own visits to the area he\u00a0<\/span>has\u00a0<\/span>witnessed warning signs of<\/span>\u00a0genocide against Nigerian Christians<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Wolf\u00a0<\/span>is\u00a0<\/span>currently\u00a0<\/span>call<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0for President Biden to appoint a special envoy to coordinate an international response to the violence,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0\u201cBut\u00a0<\/span>as\u00a0<\/span>brothers and sisters to the Christians in Nigeria<\/span>, we believe that we\u00a0<\/span>do not\u00a0<\/span>need\u00a0<\/span>to\u00a0<\/span>wait\u00a0<\/span>or\u00a0<\/span>limit our response to\u00a0<\/span>what\u00a0<\/span>governments choose\u00a0<\/span>to do or not do.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

The hospital\u00a0<\/span>currently provides accident and emergency servic<\/span>e<\/span>s and general health care<\/span>, as well as maternity services, child immunization, a diagnostic lab, and treatment for HIV and hepatitis.\u00a0<\/span>Expansion to provide more beds and specialty clinics is currently underway.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not\u00a0<\/span>just\u00a0<\/span>a\u00a0<\/span>recent\u00a0<\/span>160<\/span>–<\/span>day episode of violence,<\/span>\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span>I<\/span>t\u00a0<\/span>is a 20\u00a0<\/span>year long<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>ongoing campaign of\u00a0<\/span>brutal<\/span>ity\u00a0<\/span>by\u00a0<\/span>Muslim Fulani<\/span>\u00a0extremist<\/span>s\u00a0<\/span>against\u00a0<\/span>Christian\u00a0<\/span>towns and villages<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>all\u00a0<\/span>across Nigeria\u2019s \u2018Middle Belt\u2019<\/span>. The most\u00a0<\/span>concerning\u00a0<\/span>and effective\u00a0<\/span>form of genocide\u00a0<\/span>against Nigerian Christians\u00a0<\/span>may not be the<\/span>se<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>500\u00a0<\/span>most\u00a0<\/span>recent deaths<\/span>. It may be the\u00a0<\/span>disease<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0and illnesses that are left untreated because Christians are displaced from their homes and unable to afford or find treatment.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Representative Foley says that the Barkin Ladi region has a<\/span>n estimated<\/span>\u00a0population of\u00a0<\/span>one\u00a0<\/span>million\u00a0<\/span>but has<\/span>\u00a0only one government hospital<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0with\u00a0<\/span>little\u00a0<\/span>equipment\u00a0<\/span>or resident medical staff<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cFulani<\/span>\u00a0extremist<\/span>s don\u2019t just kill Christians with machetes and guns,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThey kill them by\u00a0<\/span>disrupting the vaccination of their\u00a0<\/span>children\u00a0<\/span>and the\u00a0<\/span>treat<\/span>ment of<\/span>\u00a0malaria, chronic hepatitis,\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>simple childhood diseases<\/span>\u00a0among the Christian children<\/span>.<\/span>\u00a0That\u2019s what our funding is designed to change.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Representative Foley says that\u00a0<\/span>Nigeria is\u00a0<\/span>currently\u00a0<\/span>listed\u00a0<\/span>third\u00a0<\/span>behind\u00a0<\/span>only Afghanistan and Iraq\u00a0<\/span>on the Global Terrorism Index<\/span>, a<\/span>n<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>annual ranking of the world\u2019s\u00a0<\/span>terrorist hot spots compiled by the\u00a0<\/span>Institute for Economics and Peace<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Still, Representative Foley says\u00a0<\/span>there is reason for hope for Nigeria. \u201c<\/span>Fulani<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0are killing Christians, not converting them to Muslim extremism<\/span>,\u201d says Representative Foley<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201cThis is still a country where perhaps as much as 50% of the population is Christian.\u00a0<\/span>What is required of Christians in other countries is simply that we stand with them, pray with them, help them\u00a0<\/span>bury their\u00a0<\/span>dead\u00a0<\/span>and\u00a0<\/span>care for\u00a0<\/span>their wounded, and learn and be inspired by the stories of their faithfulness\u00a0<\/span>in the midst of<\/span>\u00a0relentless persecution.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
