In that bombing, local Islamic jihadists used a so-called \u201cMother of Satan\u201d bomb similar to the one used in IS-related attacks on churches in Indonesia in 2018. 31 were killed in the Zion Church attack, and Zion Church\u2019s building was destroyed.” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][vc_column_text]But according to Voice of the Martyrs Korea Representative Dr<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Hyun Sook Foley, the Easter 2019 attack has not driven Sri Lankan Christians into hiding. \u201cIn fact, the bombing has resulted in a new wave of evangelism and church planting by Christians in the Muslim and Hindu majority areas of Sri Lanka,\u201d says Representative Foley.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”35729″ img_size=”600×600″ alignment=”center”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

Representative Foley cites the case of one Sri Lankan pastor (name and location withheld for security reasons) who has planted a church in a fundamentalist Muslim village on Sri Lanka\u2019s eastern coast. \u201cThe village where the pastor was sent as a church planter is less than an hour away from the home mosque of the mastermind behind the 2019 Zion Church bombing,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cHis church has grown to about 100 people, although he and his church members receive constant death threats. They\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0be careful because of the villagers\u2019 deep animosity toward those who leave Islam. Christian converts routinely suffer family rejection and attacks.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Representative Foley says that Christians in Sri Lanka are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>most commonly persecuted<\/span><\/span>\u00a0by Buddhist militants. \u201cSome Buddhist leaders view Christians as a threat to their political dominance,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThey resent the Christians\u2019 nonconformity with community and cultural norms. Sri Lankan nationalists seek to create a purely Buddhist Sinhalese nation, pushing out minority Hindus, Muslims and Christians.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]But Representative Foley says the 2019 Easter bombing of Zion Church raised awareness among the Christian community of Sri Lanka about persecution from another source: Muslim radicals connected to IS.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”35734″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”Pastors in Sri Lanka like these expect constant opposition from Buddhist nationals.” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:13px|text_align:center|color:%230a0a0a|line_height:1.45em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<\/p>\n

\u201cMuslims make up 9.7% of the population in Sri Lanka, but very little Christian outreach was taking place amongst the growing Muslim communities prior to the Easter bombing,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cMany Christians either didn\u2019t understand their Muslim neighbors, or they were afraid of them. The bombing caused Sri Lankan church leaders to realize the need to train their church members how to evangelize people from Muslim backgrounds and how to best disciple Muslim background believers who accept Christ.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that Voice of the Martyrs Korea has agreed to help fund a comprehensive ongoing training program in Muslim evangelism led by Sri Lanka church leaders. The training consists of twice annual trainings for Sri Lanka\u2019s 44 pastors\u2019 fellowships, in addition to regional training events throughout the year and specialized in-depth training for pastors chosen for church planting in Muslim majority areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”35736″ img_size=”full” alignment=”center”][vc_custom_heading text=”The rented fellowship hall where Zion Church presently meets for worship as they rebuild their church building. As for Zion Church on the second anniversary of the bombing, Representative Foley notes that the church has continued to meet every Sunday at 9AM in a rented church building while a new sanctuary is being built. \u201cSome former church members are afraid to return, while a few others are physically unable because of their injuries. But the church leaders there tell us that they are not aware of anyone who has left the Christian faith because of the bombing,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThe bombing did not drive Christians away from the church, but it is driving them out into the mission field of Hindu and Muslim majority villages to share the gospel.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
