In the altered version, Jesus proclaims himself to be a sinner and stones the woman caught in the act of adultery.” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline” link=”|||”][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>i<\/span><\/span>n 2018, the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Chinese official educational organization called the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Editorial and Reviewing Committee approved\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Professional Ethics and Law<\/span><\/span>, edited by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Zhongmei<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Pan, Gang Li, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Baoyu<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Xu<\/span><\/span>, as an official textbook<\/span><\/span>. Th<\/span><\/span>e\u00a0<\/span><\/span>textbook\u00a0<\/span><\/span>includes\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a heavily revised version of the story in<\/span><\/span>\u00a0John 8<\/span><\/span>\u00a0about a woman brought to Jesus\u00a0<\/span><\/span>for judgment\u00a0<\/span><\/span>after being caught in the act of adultery<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The original account\u00a0<\/span>reads<\/span>:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He (Jesus) stood up and said to them, \u201cLet him who is without sin among you be the first to throw a stone at her.\u201d \u2026 But when they heard it, they went away one by one, beginning with the older ones, and Jesus was left alone with the woman standing before him. Jesus stood up and said to her,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cWoman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?\u201d She said, \u201cNo one, Lord.\u201d And Jesus said,<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u201cNeither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more.\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Foley says, \u201c<\/span>The textbook also adds,\u00a0<\/span>\u2018<\/span>But if the law can only be enforced by unblemished ones, the law will only die.<\/span>\u2019\u00a0<\/span>The textbook infers that if only people without sin can enforce the law, the law will become powerless. It implies that because illegal behaviors of Chinese judicial officials in law enforcement are unavoidable, they should be tolerated.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Representative Foley says that a<\/span>lthough some perceive th<\/span>e aim of the\u00a0<\/span>textbook\u00a0<\/span>to be the\u00a0<\/span>cultivat<\/span>ion of\u00a0<\/span>the professional ethics of legal practitioners,\u00a0<\/span>the book violates professional ethics by\u00a0<\/span>fabricat<\/span>ing<\/span>\u00a0biblical text.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The CCP has pressured the Christian community in China for years, trying to reinterpret the biblical doctrine and theology to conform to the socialist values Xi Jinping advocates<\/span>,\u201d Representative Foley says<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>\u201c<\/span>Until now, however, Chinese officials rarely, so openly presented an altered biblical passage in an official textbook.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Representative Foley says that the textbook publication should mobilize the global Christian community to support the Christians of China in\u00a0<\/span>distributing the Bible as widely as possible. \u201cWe also need to\u00a0<\/span>remember and pray for the Christian attorneys who<\/span>m<\/span>the government has\u00a0<\/span>imprisoned\u00a0<\/span>because of their faith. The only way to identify counterfeit money is to know what the original looks like. In the same way, the only way to expose counterfeit Bible stories and counterfeit\u00a0<\/span>Christian\u00a0<\/span>ethics\u00a0<\/span>is to support Chinese Christians in Bible distribution and in the care and support of Christian attorneys in prison.\u201d<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
