[vc_section][vc_row][vc_column][vc_single_image image=”29590″ img_size=”full”][vc_custom_heading text=”Voice of the Martyrs Korea today announced a new shortwave radio broadcast into North Korea, to begin airing September 1.” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:1.2em|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” el_class=”headline”][vc_column_text]According to Voice of the Mart<\/span><\/span>y<\/span><\/span>rs Korea Representative Dr. Hyun Sook Foley, the new 30<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>minute broadcast will\u00a0<\/span><\/span>bring the ministry\u2019s total number of daily broadcasts into North Korea to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>five. Four of the broadcasts are via short wave radio and one is via medium wave (AM) radio. All five programs are broadcast into North Korea from outside of South Korea.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>content of all five daily broadcasts is the same: Readings of the North Korea<\/span><\/span>n dialect<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Chos<\/span><\/span>un<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Bible<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>by North Korean voice actors<\/span><\/span>, sermons from early Korean Christians, and\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hymns that are popular among North Korean underground Christians<\/span><\/span>, sung by North Koreans<\/span><\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe do not\u00a0<\/span><\/span>publicly announce\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>radio\u00a0<\/span><\/span>frequenc<\/span><\/span>ies<\/span><\/span>\u00a0or\u00a0<\/span><\/span>broadcast\u00a0<\/span><\/span>time<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0for security reasons,\u201d says Representative Foley, \u201c<\/span><\/span>And we regularly\u00a0<\/span><\/span>change\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the radio frequencies and broadcast times\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in order to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>address jamming efforts.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>But no one in North Korea will have a difficult time finding\u00a0<\/span><\/span>this new broadcast<\/span><\/span>, since like our other daily programs, this additional broadcast will be aired on a\u00a0<\/span><\/span>strong frequency.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/2″][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>new broadcast, which will air at a different time of day than the ministry\u2019s other\u00a0<\/span><\/span>four\u00a0<\/span><\/span>broadcasts<\/span><\/span>\u00a0to North Korea<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0will enable\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the ministry to reach\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a new\u00a0<\/span><\/span>audience<\/span><\/span>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span><\/span>Since we began broadcasting in 2005, we have continued to research listening patterns by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>talking to North\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Koreans wherever they are found. Our research causes us to conclude that North Koreans remain avid radio listeners<\/span><\/span>. This additional<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>airing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is scheduled during the most popular time\u00a0<\/span><\/span>of day for listening in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>which we\u00a0<\/span><\/span>have not previously broadcast.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Representative Foley says that the target audience of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>all of<\/span><\/span>\u00a0the ministry\u2019s broadcasts is underground North Korean Christians. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOur content is not politics, current events, K-Pop<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>information about South Korean life,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>or sermons from South Korean pastors<\/span><\/span>. It is Bible.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0It is sermons preached from before there was a South\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Korea and a North Korea.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The content is timeless and precious.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0The purpose is Christian discipleship, not defection.<\/span><\/span>\u201d Representative Foley says that Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u00a0<\/span><\/span>ha<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>received confidential\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reports from radio industry sources that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>many as\u00a0<\/span><\/span>10% of the North Korean population<\/span><\/span>\u00a0may have been exposed to its broadcasts<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0Representative Foley says that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>North Korean defectors arriving in South Korea will sometimes comment to her about the broadcasts. \u201cMany prefer the political broadcasts,\u201d she says. \u201cBut it is interesting to note that the Christian broadcasts are consistently among the most jammed<\/span><\/span>\u00a0by the authorities<\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n
