\u201cNorth Koreans are looking for hope in this time of pandemic<\/span><\/span>, and they are finding it in the Bible,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201c<\/span><\/span>Even though the North Korean a<\/span><\/span>uthorities\u00a0<\/span><\/span>make the ordinary laborers work as hard as ever, they seem to be fearful\u00a0<\/span><\/span>about catching the virus from<\/span><\/span>\u00a0them. That \u2018social distancing\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/span>creates some opportunities for covert Bible distribution that we have not had\u00a0<\/span><\/span>previously<\/span><\/span>.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Voice of the Martyrs Korea supplies audio and printed\u00a0<\/span><\/span>North Korean dialect\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bibles to North Koreans inside North Korea, as well as to North Korean laborers working abroad and North Korean sex trafficked women in China.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bibles are\u00a0<\/span><\/span>hand<\/span><\/span>–<\/span><\/span>distributed\u00a0<\/span><\/span>one at a time\u00a0<\/span><\/span>directly to recipients\u00a0<\/span><\/span>as part of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>small\u00a0<\/span><\/span>care packages containing other items like masks<\/span><\/span>,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>medicines<\/span><\/span>, and hygiene items<\/span><\/span>. The distribution is done by underground Christians from North Korea and the other countries where Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reaches\u00a0<\/span><\/span>North Korean<\/span><\/span>\u00a0citizen<\/span><\/span>s.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Representative Foley says that\u00a0<\/span><\/span>s<\/span><\/span>o far in 2020,\u00a0<\/span><\/span>2,630<\/span><\/span>\u00a0audio and print Bibles have been\u00a0<\/span><\/span>individually hand-<\/span><\/span>distributed<\/span><\/span>, in addition to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>11,928<\/span><\/span>\u00a0launched into North Korea by balloons and rice bottles<\/span><\/span>, as confirmed by GPS tracking<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0The Bible is also read\u00a0<\/span><\/span>nightly on Voice of the Martyrs Korea\u2019s four shortwave and AM radio broadcasts.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Representative Foley says that t<\/span><\/span>he ministry plans to send out\u00a0<\/span><\/span>approximately\u00a0<\/span><\/span>40,000 North Korean Bibles this year.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Representative Foley likens the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>person-to-person Bible distribution\u00a0<\/span><\/span>strategy to that of pioneering missionary John Ross.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMissionary Ross believed that people\u00a0<\/span><\/span>could\u00a0<\/span><\/span>meet Jesus\u00a0<\/span><\/span>directly through\u00a0<\/span><\/span>reading or hearing\u00a0<\/span><\/span>a vernacular language Bible,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThe most interesting aspect of the testimonial letters we receive back from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>these current\u00a0<\/span><\/span>North Korean Bible recipients is\u00a0<\/span><\/span>that their Christian language and thought in the letters\u00a0<\/span><\/span>is very raw. It\u00a0<\/span><\/span>comes only from the Bible, not from additional training\u00a0<\/span><\/span>from churches or missionaries.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0One letter says in part, \u2018<\/span><\/span>It looks like everything in my life is transforming into a new creation. Thank you for those who are sending the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u201c<\/span><\/span>new world<\/span><\/span>\u201d.\u2019 They are being discipled only by the Holy Spirit guiding their Bible reading and listening. I think Missionary Ross would be delighted by that.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]The ministry\u00a0<\/span><\/span>released\u00a0<\/span><\/span>six<\/span><\/span>\u00a0letters\u00a0<\/span><\/span>it received this past week\u00a0<\/span><\/span>from\u00a0<\/span><\/span>North Korean\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bible recipients<\/span><\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span>The letters are shown here, with slight alterations in\u00a0<\/span><\/span>appearance\u00a0<\/span><\/span>to ensure the safety of the writers.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Representative Foley says that the unexpected increase in demand has caused Voice of the Martyrs Korea to have to plan for an additional printing of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>North Korean\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Bibles this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a nice problem to have, really,\u201d says Representative Foley. \u201cThe reprint will cost approximately 40,000,000 KRW, but already we received a single donation of 10,000,000 KRW<\/span><\/span>\u00a0toward the project<\/span><\/span>. We are trusting the Lord to supply the rest.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cWho can send his only son to save other people? For mere human beings, this is a very difficult concept that God sent his only Son Jesus to save us. I have finally found the amazing news. I have been educated and thought it was accidental and natural that the earth began to form and that monkeys became humans. As I was listening to the audio Bible, I have received this amazing news that God has saved the world through his suffering. God please forgive us, human beings, who distressed you. We will give our lives in return for God\u2019s passionate love.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

When we were given [the audio Bibles], we were earnestly requested to listen to it secretly only at nighttime\u00a0<\/span><\/span>in order to<\/span><\/span>\u00a0avoid the eyes of our state security comrades. We are encouraged to work throughout difficult nights as we are listening to the stories and songs. Thank you for giving [the ministry packs]. We are in an area where there is nothing to see or hear. I have come to have this question: What would our lives be without the presence of God? It looks like everything in my life is transforming into a new creation. However, I <\/span><\/span>have seen hope and come out of fear as I encou<\/span><\/span>ntered<\/span><\/span>\u00a0God for the first time (as I listened to\u00a0<\/span><\/span>the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>audio bible). I look for the day when more people believe in God than in Juche\u00a0<\/span><\/span>id<\/span><\/span>e<\/span><\/span>ology<\/span><\/span>.
