The acrid smoke burned his skin, throat and eyes, until he eventually agreed to renounce his faith. The couple has since fled to another village where they are able to openly follow Christ.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not able to release the name or location of this couple because of the danger they are in, despite their relocation,\u201d said Voice of the Martyrs representative Hyun Sook Foley. \u201cPray for this couple\u2019s faith and pray that God will soften the village leaders\u2019 hearts toward him.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column width=”1\/4″][vc_single_image image=”17023″ img_size=”full” onclick=”custom_link” img_link_target=”_blank” link=”https:\/\/queme.org\/en\/\/?s=hmong&v=38dd815e66db”][vc_custom_heading text=”Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR) Website” font_container=”tag:p|font_size:11px|text_align:center|color:%23000000|line_height:1.6em” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:400%20regular%3A400%3Anormal”][\/vc_column][vc_column width=”3\/4″][vc_column_text]This latest incident comes only months after the Vietnam Committee on Human Rights (VCHR) submitted a report to the United Nations detailing widespread persecution of Hmong Christians in Vietnam from 2002 to 2017.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn Vietnam, Christianity is often associated with foreign oppression,\u201d said Representative Foley.
\n\u201cThat is particularly true among the Hmong, who are a minority population who live in the north. Authorities fear that the idea of Jesus as messiah could kindle a revolutionary spirit among the Hmong, leading to revolt.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Representative Foley noted that although more than 300,000 Hmong have converted to Christianity since the 1980s, they continue to face hostility from other Hmong who are deeply committed to their traditional religious beliefs.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey face persecution from within their tribe and also from without,\u201d said Representative Foley.
\n\u201cThat is why Voice of the Martyrs Korea is supporting local Vietnamese church leaders to provide persecution preparedness training for Hmong and other Vietnamese Christians.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

[\/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Foley explains that the training is important because the persecution in Vietnam is complex, coming from official sources as well as families. Foley said, \u201cSometimes it is direct, as in the case of the man who was recently hung upside down over the fire. But sometimes it is indirect. Christians are told that they can have a much more successful life if they give up their faith.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

She says that training from local church leaders is key because they understand better than anyone how to apply the Bible to their specific situation.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column_inner][\/vc_row_inner][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row overlay_dotted=””][vc_column][vc_column_text]Two persecution preparedness training sessions are planned for this fall, with each training session costing approximately 1.5 million KRW and reaching about 30 pastors.
