The small Baptist church had been facing problems since 2016 when private developers and the city government began court proceedings to claim land on which part of the church building sat. The church\u2019s building was surrounded by dilapidated houses, but the city had plans for high rise apartments and a commercial center in the area. So through the courts they declared several of the homes and buildings as illegal construction, including part of the church\u2019s building. Over the next three years, demolition crews made repeated attempts to tear down the <\/span>disputed portion, but each time they came, church members gathered and prevented the demolition. The church members always responded peacefully, insisting that their building was properly permitted<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

When a demolition crew arrived on September 24, 2020 <\/span>with the court order in hand<\/span>, church members formed a human chain around the church building. A junior bailiff broke the human chain by pulling first Deacon Koldiaev and then other church members out of the line and taking them to the police station. Later, the bailiff alleged that Deacon Koldiaev had stepped out of the chain and assaulted him. The deacon was charged with \u201cuse of violence dangerous to life or health against a representative of the authorities\u201d, a crime punishable by up to ten years in prison.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

During the trial, the defense showed video of the event which clearly exonerated Deacon Koldiaev. Despite that video, despite any witnesses to support the bailiff\u2019s claim, and even despite the bailiff repeatedly changing his testimony, Deacon Koldiaev was convicted on May 13, 2021 and sentenced to two years in prison.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

To make matters worse, Deacon Koldiaev\u2019s infant son fell and hit his head ten days before the start of his trial, suffering a traumatic brain injury. His wife Anna was unable to be with him even to see him off to prison because she was at the hospital with their child.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She says the couple\u2019s son, now one year old, is steadily improving. The couple also now has a three-year-old son. \u201cDon’t be too sad for our family,\u201d she said in remarks to the International Union of Churches of Evangelical Christian Baptists. \u201cThis is only a small part of the sorrow of the children of God.\u201d Mrs. Koldiaeva says she receives child benefits and material support provided by friends. \u201cThank God, there is enough for everything,\u201d she adds.\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Voice of the Martyrs Korea is undertaking a letter writing campaign to encourage Deacon Koldiaev, whose prison sentence is scheduled to end on March 3, 2023.\u202f\u202f<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Deacon Koldiaev<\/span> recommends that in addition to letters that are sent to him personally<\/span>, <\/span>that people also include some extra postcards with a scripture verse or spiritual edification that he can give to unbelievers who are in the same prison with him.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_empty_space height=”16px”][vc_custom_heading text=”UPDATE: JAN, 2023″ font_container=”tag:h5|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1675302066884{margin-bottom: 0.6em !important;}” el_class=”country-title”][vc_column_text]We recently learned that he is now serving the rest of his jail term doing forced labor. While he is not completely free, he is now able to work and live outside of prison. He is able to move freely in the area he is assigned by the government.<\/p>\n

He is scheduled to finish his sentence in March of 2023. At the penitentiary gate, he was joyfully greeted by fellow believers, who were praising God for this long-awaited answer to prayer. Together, they bowed down in prayers of worship and thanksgiving. After that, brother Koldiaev returned home to be reunited with his family and church community.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Please do not stop praying for him and his family as they continue to grow in faith, serve their community and testify about the Lord\u2019s goodness and faithfulness during times of trial.
