Pastor Zhang was initially detained on Nov. 16, 2013, when authorities asked to meet with him at his church. Instead, authorities bound Zhang, who served as the local head of the China Christian Council and Three-Self Patriotic Movement, and took him into custody.<\/p>\n

In the week around Zhang\u2019s detention, authorities detain more than 20 church members, related to a land dispute between the church and the Nanle county government. Zhang\u2019s daughter, her husband and their baby fled the area to avoid arrest, and she later told China Aid that she\u2019d received more than 10 threatening phone calls. Callers threatened to \u201cwipe out her entire family\u201d if she continued to speak out about the church.<\/p>\n

Zhang was sentenced to 12 years in prison on July 4, 2014, and his August appeal to a higher court was rejected. Zhang was 49 when he was arrested.[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”UPDATE: Zhang\u202fShaojie\u202fTransferred – Jan. 2021″ font_container=”tag:h5|text_align:left” google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1614303646935{margin-bottom: 0.6em !important;}” el_class=”country-title”][vc_column_text]Zhang\u202f<\/span>Shaojie<\/span>\u202fwas transferred to another prison in January 2021. According to an official letter received by his sister, Zhang\u202f<\/span>Shaojie<\/span>\u202fwill spend the next two months in \u201cconcentrated education\u201d at the Zhengzhou City prison. After the initial two-month period, prisoners are allowed one family visit per month.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Pastor Zhang\u2019s daughter said that the prison\u202fwas\u202fhaving\u202fhim\u202ftake a small white pill\u202fdaily. During a prison visit, his family tried to convince him not to take the pill, but he said the prison doctor told him it was for high blood pressure.\u202fZhang\u2019s family members noticed Pastor Zhang\u2019s mental state was failing and that his personality had drastically changed during their last prison visitation.\u202f<\/span>\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n

Zhang\u202f<\/span>Shaojie<\/span>\u202fstill has five years left in his 12-year prison sentence.<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Update” font_container=”tag:h5|text_align:left|color:%23111111″ google_fonts=”font_family:Noto%20Sans%3Aregular%2Citalic%2C700%2C700italic|font_style:700%20bold%20regular%3A700%3Anormal” css=”.vc_custom_1764072824742{margin-bottom: 0.6em !important;}” el_class=”country-title”][vc_column_text css=””]After serving in full 12-year prison sentence, Pastor Zhang Shaojie was released from prison and escorted back to his home on November 16th<\/sup>. Upon being released, he expressed his deep gratitude for the prayers and efforts made by the global Body of Christ for his freedom and his family during his imprisonment.<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cComing out of prison during this month of Thanksgiving has been full of God\u2019s grace \u2014 I have seen the Holy Spirit\u2019s presence every day.\u201d He is deeply grateful for help and support of the international community. He said, \u201cOtherwise, I might not be here today and might have been \u2018disappeared.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
