평화협상은 북한 지하교인들에게 어떤 영향을 미치는가?

전례없이 많은 유럽 기독교인들이 자신들을 방문한 북한 기독교인에게 물었다.
“남북, 북미평화협상이 북한 지하교인들에게 어떤 영향을 미칩니까?”
(2018년 6월20일) 이달 중순, 네덜란드를 방문한 한국 VOM을 만나기 위해 전례없이 많은 네덜란드 기독교인들이 모였다. 이 팀의 방문목적은 평화협상이 북한 지하교회에 미치는 영향에 관해 논하는 것이었다.
“지난 10년 동안 우리는 네덜란드를 6~7차례 방문했습니다. 그러나 이번에 저희가 받은 관심은 예전에 경험했던 것과는 달랐습니다.” VOM 현숙 폴리 대표는 말한다. “작년에 두 명의 북한 기독교인과 함께 네덜란드를 방문했을 때 가장 큰 행사에서는 600명 정도 참석했습니다. 그러나 올해 주요 행사에는 1300명 이상 참석했고, 200명 대상의 청소년 캠프에는 600명 이상이 참석했습니다.”
폴리 대표에 의하면, 행사의 참석자들이 가장 자주 한 질문은 “남북, 북미평화협상이 북한 지하교인들에게 어떤 영향을 미치는가?”였다고 한다.
“이는 기독교인들에게 한가지를 상기시켜 줍니다. ‘평화협상’이라 불리는 과정에 비핵화와 경제 번영보다 더 중요한 안건이 있다는 점 말입니다.
전 세계 기독교인들은 이렇게 질문합니다.
‘북한 기독교인들은 어떻게 되는 것인가?’ 남한의 기독교인 또한 이런 질문을 해야하지 않을까요?”
북한 지하교인이었던 구 자매와 VOM팀은 날마다 매체들과 인터뷰를 하고, 강연을 하고, 교단 지도자들과 사적인 만남을 가졌다. 구 자매의 아버지는 목사는 아니었지만 북한의 한 교회의 지도자가 되었다. 한국전쟁이 일어나기 직전, 그 교회의 목사와 다른 많은 성도들이 박해를 피해 남쪽으로 내려왔기 때문이다. 그녀의 아버지와 오빠는 공산주의자들에게 고난을 겪었고 이런 가정환경 때문에 그녀 역시 힘든 삶을 살았다. 그러나 구 자매가 VOM의 UU선교학교에서 훈련 받고 난 뒤, 오늘날 그녀는 북한주민들을 만나는 어느곳에서나 선교사로 일하면서 자신의 아버지가 감당했던 사명을 이어가고 있다.
구 자매는 말한다.
“사람들은 북한에 복음이 들어가길 기도해야 한다고 말하곤 합니다. 그러나 기꺼이 대가를 지불하고자 하는 전도자들에게 복음의 문은 늘 열려 있었습니다. 기독교인들은 70년이 넘는 시간 동안 그 대가를 기꺼이 지불해왔고, 오늘도 그러합니다.”
그녀는 이렇게 덧붙였다.
“우리나라의 기독교인들은 오늘도 그리스도의 사역을 적극적으로 감당합니다. 우린 기독교 사역을 하는데 안전을 보장해주는 정치적인 변화를 기다리지 않습니다. 북한에 있는 사람들에겐 오늘 그리스도가 필요합니다. 그래서 우리는 그들에게 그리스도를 전합니다. 우리는 단지 그 일을 완수할 수 있는 도구를 요청하는 것입니다.”
폴리 대표는 설명한다. “싱가포르 회담에서 논의된 것은 북한정부와 다른 나라 정부가 맺는 관계에 대한 것이었습니다. 그러나 북한정부가 자국민들과 맺는 관계는 논의되지 않았습니다. 북한정부와 자국민들의 관계를 다루기 위해서는 먼저 북한정부와 하나님과의 관계를 다루어야 합니다.”

‘How Does the NK/US/SK Peace Process Affect NK Underground Believers?’
(June 20, 2018) This month, record crowds of Christians in the Netherlands gathered to hear Voice of the Martyrs Korea share about the impact of the peace process on the North Korean Underground Church.
“We’ve spoken in the Netherlands 6 or 7 times in the past 10 years, but the interest this year was unlike anything we have previously experienced,”
Voice of the Martyrs board chair Hyun Sook Foley says.
“Last year, we visited the Netherlands with two North Korean Christians and the largest event was attended by 600 people. But this year more than 1,300 people attended the main event, and a youth conference designed for 200 attracted more than 600.”
Board chair Foley explains that the most frequent question of attendees was “How does the NK/US/SK peace process affect NK underground believers?” Foley notes, “It’s a reminder that for Christians there is more at stake in the so-called ‘peace process’ than issues of nuclear disarmanent or economic prosperity. Christians around the world want to know, ‘What about the NK Christians?’ This should challenge us in South Korea to be asking those same questions as well.”
ach day, the Voice of the Martyrs team, including North Korean underground Christian Mrs. Goo (not her real name), did media interviews, private meetings with denominational leaders and speaking events. Mrs. Goo’s father was not a pastor but became the leader of their church inside North Korea when the pastor and many other members of the church fled south to escape persecution shortly before the Korean War. Her father and brother suffered at the hands of communists and she herself had a difficult life because of her family background. Today she has reclaimed the mission of her father as a missionary to North Koreans wherever they are found, after being trained by VOM Korea at its Underground University.
Mrs. Goo says,
“Sometimes people say they pray for North Korea to open to the gospel. But North Korea continues to be open to the gospel, for any messenger willing to pay the price. For more than 70 years, North Korean Christians have gladly paid that price, and they continue to pay it today.”
She adds,
“Christians in our country are actively doing the work of Christ today. We are not waiting for political changes that would make Christian work safer. We know that people in our country need Christ today, and so we bring Christ to them. We only ask that you give us the tools to complete the work.”
Board chair Foley explains, “The Singapore Summit addressed the relationship of the NK government to other governments, but it did not address the NK government’s relationship to its own people. To address the relationship of the NK government to its own people requires the NK government to first address its relationship to God.”
